Random Fun New York! - 16 years ago
So I have lived in NYC for over 3 years now and I find myself in a (gasp) routine. This is fine, I love my routine however I have realized lately that is all I do, my routine (fave bar, restaurants, etc). This is a problem for me. I live in NY and I should take use of it! I went to see Sound of Music at the Ziegfeld last night and loved it. This got me to thinking, how many NY'ers out thereby NYCchic - Ask a New Yorker :
Negotiating rent increases - 17 years ago
So my new lease is ready for signing. I received the lease with 4.3% increase for the new year. My friend mentioned I should try to talk that down. I love my apartment and really don't want to tick my landlord/management company off and lose the apt. That said the extra 4.3% would mean alot to me and anything I could save would help. Has anyone heard of negotiating increases? I thought it waby NYCchic - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Moving to NY - 17 years ago
I am an accountant and I work in public accounting. We have lots of consultants that come in and out especially during our busy season. The company we use most is siegfried. Might want to try Robert Half as well. Check these links out: Good luck, she can always try a headhunter when she gets here. I get about 2-3 calls a week from them. The accounting market is great here in NY.by NYCchic - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Moving Companies - 17 years ago
I used someone recommended by my landlord. They were very good, I am a single girl so clearly I was a little nervous letting random guys into my apt but my landlord understood this and said he has trusted them to be with his wife alone. The move went great and since the move I used them to help move a couch I bought on craigslist. Check out soliemoves.com. That is his website. Very nice guy. Goodby NYCchic - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: UES, UWS, East Village? - 17 years ago
I am in my 20's and live on the UWS and I love it. I love the subway systems up here. That is the main reason I refuse to live on the UES. Even living at 72nd I am downtown and at work in less than 30 minutes! I would not want to live in the East Village because I think it would be quite loud at night (some may disagree). Everytime I am down there late at night it always seems so loud and brby NYCchic - Ask a New Yorker :

Daisegee, It appears you are correct. I did not know this was what's going on but I go to church right by Penn Station so I see the work every Sunday. Check out the article on it below: Interesting concept.by NYCchic - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Moving to the Upper East Side - 17 years ago
My friend is a vegetarian. Her favorite restaurant is Zen Palate with several locations I think. I got her a book on vegetarian restaurants for Chrismtas (well Hannukah for her). Here is the link: . I am a member of NYSC which is nice b.c I can go down by work or up by my house or anywhere in the city really. I like the flexibility. It can be pricy I get a substantial discount through my workby NYCchic - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: Tip a Mover? - 18 years ago
Yes same moving company, small company so I imagine it would be 2 of the original 3 guys. It isn't a sleeper sofa but it was a walk up. So it will be fairly difficult I assume... Knowing that one of them is the owner should I assume payment is enough or still tip like $15 each? Not sure of the protocall and don't want to be cheap but don't exactly have $ to throw around...by NYCchic - Ask a New Yorker :
Tip a Mover? - 18 years ago
I have seen a topic on this previously but have a bit of a different question. I am having a couch and armchair moved that I have purchased used. Its coming from an elevator building but I live in a 3rd floor walkup. Should I tip the movers? There are two how much should I tip each? Any advice would be great, when I moved in originally I tipped $25 each as it is quite a bit of stairs but that sby NYCchic - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Summer in Manhattan - need budgeting advise NOW - 18 years ago
Thought I would put my two cents in here as a single 20 something female. How much you spend will depend ENTIRELY on how you plan on spending your time here. I was chatting with a coworker the other day and though we are the same age we spend our money here in the city very differently. I live alone and pay more for rent, she has 3 roommates and spends on clothes cabs and "refreshments"by NYCchic - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Living in New York City - 18 years ago
Subway - I get a monthly metrocard for $76 a month. Taxis - obviously vary by how far you are going. I can go roughly 10 blocks for $5 if I stay on the same side of town but 10 blocks and crosstown is usually abour $10. Groceries - I am single so I spend at most $40 a week sometimes less depending on how much I ordered in. Utilities - Electric: typically $40 - $50 for a one bedroom (500 sby NYCchic - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: STUDENT HOUSING - 18 years ago
How about this. Also for Educational Housing Services you can stay in more than those 2 places they list. Check out their website for others. Re: What area of Manhattan? - 18 years ago
The Upper East is very popular with the ppl in their late 20's I work with mostly due to the affordable rent and the availability of bars. I also think you might like Hells Kitchen or Gramercy. I would stay away from the East Village right by NYU (I find it so active all the time I think it would be hard do anything requiring quiet) as well as downtown b/c on the weekends downtown is a ghostby NYCchic - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: Where to live in Manhattan...Help! - 18 years ago
Heather, If you are interested in no fee buildings in Manhattan I have a listing of them I would be happy to share with you if you provide your email. It lists both doorman and non doorman buildings that you call to find out their availabilities thus cutting out the broker (and fees). Just so you know I just signed a lease for an apt on W 71st St (between Broadway and West End) for a true oneby NYCchic - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: When to look for an apartment? - 18 years ago
If you are looking for a place downtown, as in the financial district you should be able to go broker-less. If you give me your email I can send you a listing of many no fee buildings in the city. There are phone numbers and you can call each building in a location that interests you. Many doorman buildings don't require brokers and those reign supreme downtown.by NYCchic - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Living in NY - 18 years ago
It would be best to get some form of a green card to get a decent job. Without one you are generally working under the table and that may mean not for minimum wage. I know I had friends who came to America one summer and got a special 3 month only visa through a company that arranges it for university students. That would allow you to get a decent job here. I would also look into housing ideas inby NYCchic - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Working In New York - 18 years ago
The way that most of the people I know that have left the firm I work with currently have gotten jobs in through head hunters. They set up the interiews and do all the negotiating for you. If you are interested let me know and I will try to find some names for you.by NYCchic - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Tudor City? - 18 years ago
My friend lives in Tudor City and loves it! All buildings face each other but being high rises are visible if you know where to look. You walk up the hill on 41st and Tudor City is built above 42nd Street by 1st. My friends apt has views of both the Chrysler and the Empire State Building. There are also views of the East River in some apts. There is a small park and some playgrounds. I had neveby NYCchic - Ask a New Yorker :
Is this a safe area in Brooklyn? - 18 years ago
Hi, my friend is moving to NYC. She wants to live in Brooklyn as that is where she is going to be teaching. I live/work in Manhattan and don't often venture to Brooklyn so I can't help much. She found an apartment she really likes that is in her price range however she was not sure how great a neighborhood it is. Of course the landlord assured her it was a good areas but she still isnby NYCchic - Ask a New Yorker :

FYI it is newyork.craigslist.org (Note the ORG not com I often typed in the wrong address when I was searching.) It will allow you to click on Brooklyn and focus only on Brooklyn listing and search by price range and size as well which is great. Good luck!by NYCchic - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: area around columbia university - 18 years ago
Just thought I would put my say in here. I live in Morningside and I really like it. It is a very safe area and there are lots of things on Broadway and Amsterdam. I would say definitely move there. It is just like Upper West Side w/o the higher UWS rents. The old South of 96th street only being safe is no longer the norm!by NYCchic - Ask a New Yorker :

There are flowers onsite but I don't know if tourists bring them. I would assume it to be families. If it was someone losts birthday family would bring flowers etc. That to me seems why there is always a small smattering of flowers when I walk by.by NYCchic - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: NYC Cab drivers...do they have a clue? - 18 years ago
The main difference between cab drivers in NYC and London is that in London (at least this is how it appeared to me when I was there studying) most have lived in London for a long time and being a cab driver is not just a temporary job. In NYC many of our cab drivers are immigrants that have not yet found a better job. Driving a cab is the only job they could get when they moved here so they areby NYCchic - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Banking - 18 years ago
Nope I have Chase Manhattan and I am very pleased with them. I work downtown so their headquarters are a block away. I would say very important is that they have a branch close to your work. I know that it seems (to me) that Citibank and Chase have the most locations. If you wait a bit they usually send you stuff to persuade you to join. I got $50 from Chase but its better than nothing.by NYCchic - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Apartment in Manhattan.. - 18 years ago
Okay Manhattan is all about location. I once heard the 2 scarcest things in Manhattan are a good neighborhood followed by space. Prepare to live in close quarters. Consider a share, I know that saves alot not only in rent but in bills as well. Craigslist.org lists shares available. Also consider an outer borough by living not on Manhattan that helps rent considerably there are 1 bedrooms cheaperby NYCchic - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Safety in NYC... and other questions - 18 years ago
Betoracle- That was a crazy thread on the Tripadvisor site! I read it. Wow what a bummer. Anyhow, NYCTexan I am sure you will find that NYC is very safe. I am also a recent college grad (Dec 2004!) and feel very safe in NYC. Whenever I get jumpy its because I freak myself out for no reason. I live in Morningside Heights and while I would be uncomfortable living much further north than that asby NYCchic - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: apartment hunt - 18 years ago
If you are willing to venture north of 96th street there might be openings in my building. There is a recently renovated 1 bedroom for $1400 I think a month. The room is amazingly small but the living room is decent size. There is a large bay window with a view of Morningside Park and new stainless steel appliances and wood floors. Let me know if you want my landlords #. That price is doable. Havby NYCchic - Ask a New Yorker :
