Re: Apartment in NYC ! - 18 years ago
Be realistic. A rental would be better no doubt. You would be stretched to find a hotel room for less than $100 per night and a decent one for less than $150 so you are on the right path with the rental but remember we aren't Kansas City (no offense to KC) so rent is very different here. If you want to pay $500 a month you picked the wrong city. Look at Craigslist and you will get a better iby NYCchic - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Recommendations on apt searching in Upper Manhattan - 18 years ago
Well here is my experience. I was one of those who stumbled upon my apt on craigslist. In a nutshell I was calling about an apt listed but unfortunately I had noticed it too late and there wer 2 applications for the place in already so the landlord didn't think I would get it. I chatted with him a bit, told him my story (gonna graduate college moving to NYC from Western NYS and needed to finby NYCchic - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Cost of living in NYC? - 18 years ago
Sorry I didn't notice this thread earlier. I do eat meat. I am a big fan of rice and pasta (definitely a starch girl!) While things can be very expensive here I generally don't buy the super expensive things. When cereal I like goes on sale I buy 4 boxes. I buy meat when it is on sale and freeze it. Most of the things I eat are cheap though, box of pasta (0.99) rice (2.99 big bag). Meaby NYCchic - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Tax Free - 18 years ago
From the NYS website: There will be two seven-day temporary exemption periods from State and certain local sales and use taxes beginning on Tuesday, August 30, 2005, and ending on Labor Day, Monday, September 5, 2005, and beginning on Monday, January 30, 2006, and ending on Sunday, February 5, 2006. Also to be noted usually this is only on purchases under $110 for clothing and footwear. It is upby NYCchic - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Recommendations on apt searching in Upper Manhattan - 18 years ago
Hmmm I live in Morningside Heights on Manhattan Avenue at 112th. I know there is at least one building that is always having open houses on 110th and Manhattan. My building also has an apt available. It is a one bedroom though that is $1400 I think a month (wood floors and new stainless steel appliances, morningside park views, just renovated agh I sound like an advertisement sorry!). Re: Area Code - 18 years ago
Wow well said Red. I have a 917 area code on my cell I guess I should be proud! and just as an FYI all our work #s out of HQ's in midtown are 646 #'s. Wonder why that is.... So maybe it is for landlines as well?by NYCchic - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: NYC apartment guidelines? - 18 years ago
I would agree. Taxes are rough here. I make $50K and take home $2600 per month! Welcome to the real world! I was DEPRESSED when I received my first paycheck. Look into Morningside Heights. I live in an attic studio for $900/month however right about now wishing my building had air conditioning, 5 fans just isn't enough in this weather! Waiting for fall......... Re: Neighborhood recommendations - 18 years ago
I live in the Columbia area. I am three blocks east but it is a great area. I wish I was a bit closer to Broadway but definitely safe. I wouldn't suggest anything north of 116th Street but I don't think your commute would be too bad. You would have to transfer from the 1 to the A or you could just walk 6 blocks north from the 1. I would definitely look near Columbia. It is called Morniby NYCchic - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Safe areas of Manhattan - 18 years ago
oops forgot to add in Manhattan safe = East side lower than 100th and West Side lower than 116 (Columbia University).by NYCchic - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Safe areas of Manhattan - 18 years ago
Okay if that was on the West Side it would be a different story. I live at 112th Street on the West Side and while it isn't the best neighborhood it isn't bad either. I am getting my rent for less than $1000 for a SMALL (like 250 sq feet) studio. There are cheap apartments to be found on Manhattan it just might take a while. My friend found a 2 bedroom for $1850 per month on the East siby NYCchic - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: which is easier? - 18 years ago
I loved Southwest too when I lived in CA but JetBlue rules the East Coast, especially NYC. THey fly right into JFK and you can get great fares from the West Coast. I know they fly to/from quite a few places in CA. Might want to look into that as long as you aren't using SWA miles.by NYCchic - Ask a New Yorker :

Betoracle, I am used to being poor in college still so it kills me to spend money. I usually spend about $8/month on laundry. Once every two weeks one load each time. I don't have the joy of a laundry room in my building so I must walk 3 blocks with it. I let my laundry build up when I first moved but I will not soon forget the stress or pain of carrying all that laundry up 4 flights ofby NYCchic - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Last try: questions about Green Wich and East Village - 18 years ago
This is just an idea. If you are so pressed for a deadline there is another site you might want to try. I know there is one guy that visits it that has been in Greenwich Village for a while. He is a professor at NYU I believe. . It is a forum for people planning trips to NYC but is frequented by many NY'ers that will be willing to put in their two cents. Technically called Morningside Heights (West Side: 110th Street). If there is anyone on the West Side I could definitely do it on Saturday and Sunday. Ideally would be close to me of course but beggers can't be choosers! Anything would be great!by NYCchic - Ask a New Yorker :
This is a super random question.... - 18 years ago
I don't know if anyone will have any kind of an answer to this but I will try anyhow. I like to run a few times a week and always see people out walking their dogs and wonder if there is anyway I can be set up with someone that has a dog but can't physically exercise it. My apartment (and work schedule) don't allow dogs and I absolutely love them. I would love an opportunity to runby NYCchic - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Gripes - 19 years ago
Generally walk on the left of the escalator and stand on the right. I can't stand slow meandering walkers. I like to walk fast so as to get to the place and get some exercise while doing it. Big groups that cover the entire sidewalk are super annoying to me but I get around that, I just walk on the street when necessary!by NYCchic - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Moving!! - 19 years ago
I just moved from Upstate NY last December. I personally being the conservative type would rather have a job in hand. You will be able to find an apt in the city. It might not be perfect but here in the city most people don't stay in one apt their whole time living here (unless they live here short term). I got my job and was able to pick my apt according to an easy commute. I got lucky withby NYCchic - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Best BBQ/Mexican? - 19 years ago
For BBQ I would have to say Dinosaur BBQ on 12th and 131st. Just opened in December and it is phenomenal. Bring your sharpie to write on the bathroom stall as is the tradition . I would have to agree that I have yet to find decent Mexican anywhere not near Mexico. I lived in SD for 8 years with my dad working in TJ (Tijuana) so nothing beats a good carne asada taco in a corn tortilla. Oh just thiby NYCchic - Ask a New Yorker :
