Re: Help with public transport from LaGuardia to Greenpoint Bklyn - 18 years ago
^^ Thank you! Maybe I will take the bus/train after all. I would rather not pay $25+ for a cab if figuring out the subway won't be that bad. I'm staying at Greenpoint because it's so cheap. As much as I wanted to stay in Manhattan to have the option of walking lots of places, a 15-min train into the island isn't that bad. Thank you thank you to everyone who replied!by Lauren - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Help with public transport from LaGuardia to Greenpoint Bklyn - 18 years ago
thanks for all of your advice! I thought I'd read somewhere that getting a cab at LGA takes forever and that a car service or bus is the better option. So, I may just get a cab since the bus/train route will be a little complicated. I'll just have one rolling bag, but my first day in the NY subway system it might not be so easy. thanks again!by Lauren - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Help with public transport from LaGuardia to Greenpoint Bklyn - 18 years ago
oh, I spoke too soon. I found this site saved in my favorites: I think I've got it now. Looks like I'll take the M60 bus, transfer to the N train, then the 7, then the G. It says it will take an hour! I hear that taxis at LaGuardia are impossible, and all of the car services I've seen only quote prices from LGA -> Manhattan. Would I be better off trying to reserve a car? Andby Lauren - Ask a New Yorker :
Help with public transport from LaGuardia to Greenpoint Bklyn - 18 years ago
I'm staying at the Greenpoint YMCA when I visit in Nov. (thanks for the recommendation!). I have been looking at the MTA's maps on their website and tried to figure it out, but I'm just going to need a pro to tell me what to do! So, I'll take a bus from the airport and transfer to the subway at some point, but where? like, I don't know what stations.. or where to meetby Lauren - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: West Side YMCA, Greenpoint YMCA - 18 years ago
Thank you so much! I'm not even going to bother with checking on the West Side Y since the Greenpoint location sounds so good. The price is amazing, and I really don't require much; I'd rather shop! As far as groceries go, I find its a good way to get a quick and cheap breakfast, just a corner store or whatever you call them. I had planned on spending at least one full day exploby Lauren - Ask a New Yorker :
West Side YMCA, Greenpoint YMCA - 18 years ago
I am going to be in NY Nov 2-8, and it looks as though the West Side Y is booked up. I am calling after I get home from work anyway, just in case, so I was wondering if anyone knew anything about this: apparently the top floor rooms are better, but I don't see on their site or the site where I am booking any "single premium" rooms. Anyway... If the west side Y is full, I amby Lauren - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: A week in New York in November - 18 years ago
I am spending a week in NY in Nov (2nd-8th) too. I think it will be a good time to visit, hopefully won't be too cold yet. Don't suppose any of the city will be decorated for the holidays by then? I don't know if they get started early in NY like some places seem to...by Lauren - Ask a New Yorker :

OK, I knew there had to be a Christmas in New York at some website, just hadn't found one yet. I posted too soon! Just found this:by Lauren - Ask a New Yorker :
How long the Christmas displays stay up? - 19 years ago
Excuse me if this has already been adressed, but I was wondering how long most stores keep their Christmas displays up? The tree in Rock Center? Other decorations around the city? I am coming to NY Jan 3, just barely missing the holiday season! It will be such a shame to so narrowly have missed the holidays in NY as it is.by Lauren - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: An idea!!! - 19 years ago
There really is no such thing as "Consumers rights" in the US, because as Maharishi stated, every store has their own policy. Each business gets to decide how they want to treat their customers. If they don't want to accept returns, they do not have to.by Lauren - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: New Year in New York - 19 years ago
I think you will find that the general consensus of the NYers on this board would be to stay away from Times Square. (I am not a New Yorker, but I have seen enough of the NYE posts.) If you use to search function, you will find many posts with recommendations on how to enjoy the holiday. It may be getting a little late to make reservations, but it seems lots of people like best to ring in the Neby Lauren - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Three little questions - 19 years ago
I'm going to NYC at the start of January, too. From weather.com, I see that for Jan the avg. high is 38 & the avg. low is 26. I currently live in Oklahoma where the avg. for January is 49 high/25 low. Now, keep in mind that in Okla the windchill factor is absolutely killer! Is it the same in NY? I'd imagine that in the city it's wouldn't be very gusty, but does it feel mby Lauren - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Orange County New York - 19 years ago
There's also an Orange County in Florida and NJ. From the Choppers site: When you hear "Orange County" you may think of California, but the Hudson Valley boasts its own. And it's there, specifically in Rock Tavern, N.Y., where you'll find Orange County Choppers — about 80 miles from New York City. It looks like it would be quite a detour. Thanks, Brian. Does anyone know anything about the store I tried to describe? It is very modern, young/hip. I am an interior design student and I like to keep track of the cool stores and interior design firms that I find. I wish I hadn't lost this one! Thanks againby Lauren - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: How long was your line to vote? - 19 years ago
I waited for mere seconds. There was one person ahead of me getting his ballot when I walked in. But all of the booths were full and then a line formed, so I guess I just had good timing.by Lauren - Ask a New Yorker :
Help finding a store/interior design firm - 19 years ago
I am looking for the website of a home furnishings store that provides interior design services. They had an online portfolio featuring their past design projects. The name is Apartment something-or-other. I'm thinking it was a number, like Apartment 9, maybe? Anyway, I've done the best I can with searching online and have come up with nothing. Re: College - 19 years ago
I would be going to college in NY, but it is far too expensive since a part-time job is all I could handle as a student. And that would not be enough $$. Good luck, though! (Oh, and a house? Those do not exist in Manhattan (I think there are maybe two), and the houses in the outer boroughs are either not in a good location or very very expensive.)by Lauren - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Alligators in our sewers? - 19 years ago
I've always trusted Snopes as a pretty reliable source. I think their article seems to explain it, especially this: "Nature writer Diane Ackerman has this to say about alligators' longevity under those conditions: But they couldn't survive for any length of time in the sewers, only a few months at the most, because they can't live long in salmonella or shigella or E.by Lauren - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: Carrie Bradshaw - 19 years ago
245 E. 73rd St. was Carrie's official adress, which does not exist. Five different locations were used to denote the exterior of her building. (^^^From the SATC Kiss and Tell book.) Re: Nov. 11/04 - 19 years ago
I know that shops will be open all day. And I am sure that there is a Veterans Day parade... somewhere. Googling it only turned blog entries about past parades. The Veterans Day parade, wherever, whatever it is, is not a huge deal like the Thanksgiving parade is.by Lauren - Ask a New Yorker :
