Re: New York in wheelchair - 13 years ago
I’m the one with the mom in a scooter (thanks for the shout, Salsa) You have some excellent advice already. We got around mostly on the subway, but I had the advantage of a day of reconnaissance before she arrived, so I could check out routes to where we wanted to go. Perhaps we were lucky, but we never encountered an inoperable elevator, or one that was too gross to use. We did have difficultyby jeans - Ask a New Yorker :

Well...it's only four blocks from the resturant I just posted about! "Bids for dinner at old NYC eatery start at $5,000" Other than that, the words "unique opportunity to buy property at a very low price", tends to raise a few red flags for me.by jeans - Ask a New Yorker :

It took some reconnaissance, but I was able to travel all over Manhattan with my mom & a rented mobility scooter. When they exist, they are often hard to find or a bit of a hike.by jeans - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: Bike Hire/Ice skating. - 14 years ago
We rented bikes at a place next to the Boathouse restaurant. Being budget-minded and (so I thought) in good shape, I opted for a one-speed cruiser. Two minutes into the ride, I learned something I did not know about Central Park...It's not flat! There are HILLS...who knew??! I huffed & puffed & PUSHED that dang bike in a couple of places. Re: Only Disconnect Slave to a little freedom from the Internet - 14 years ago
Funny, well-written story about internet withdrawal. I have to go to Baja to unplug. Once took a ten day trip to see ancient cave paintings. Half way though the trip I was asked what day it was. It took maybe a full 15 seconds and counting on my fingers to arrive at the answer, "I think it's Saturday". Weird feeling.by jeans - Ask a New Yorker :

So many restaurants...so little time...I've been known to "graze" for an evening...can't decide if you want Italian, Chinese or Thai, or try that Garlic Restaurant? Try them all...one appetizer at a time, or split an entre, then on to the next. I'd like to do that in the Village. Re: Meat Packing District - 14 years ago
The meat packing District is above Greenich Village and is the home of the Chelsea Market (9th ave & west 15th street) as well as high-end celbrity chef restaurants like Del Posto & Morimoto. If you're more the biker bar type there's Hog & Heifers on Washington. I took the Chelsea Market food tour a couple of years ago...here's the link to that post. It's a hby jeans - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: restaurants good when on weight watchers plan?? - 14 years ago
Also know that you will be doing a lot of walking AND a lot of stair climbing in & out of the Subways...I never even gave that a thought and my first visit I felt like I had been on a stairmaster all day. Maybe there's a NYC weightwatchers point roster for subways. I just love Google...look what I found...pictures and history! Vimont, or Vinmont, Road is a dead-end semicircle at Mosholu Avenue and West 254th Street. Dwellings on the road originally belonged to the Weinberg family, which translated into French is "vinmont" or vineyard. http://www.forgotten-ny.com/Alleys/morebronx/northwest.htmlby jeans - Ask a New Yorker :

If you have a keen interest in history, and appreciate the a one-of-a-kind time-capsule type experience, then go. I also have taken two different tours and for some, one might be enough to get the feel of it, but I found it all facinating.
