Thank GOODNESS for those elevators! Got stuck when I misread the map in regards to wheelchair access. Had to carry a mobility scooter over the bridge to the A train elevators. A young man volunteered to help. Met LOTS of nice people on the subways that helped me with the scooter and getting my slow-moving mom on & off the subways without getting caught in the doors.by jeans - Ask a New Yorker :

I have never heard of them but the website says there are retailers in San Diego. Thanks for ANOTHER great tip!by jeans - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Inwood - 16 years ago
Thanks for the suggestion, Salsa. This trip really got me interested in history...I saw more of upper Manhattan this time, and I have to admit that this place facinates me. I never had the opportunity to visit that farmhouse museum... but the desire to return again and again is stronger than ever! (Not that I'm not glad to be home again in my little house in the quiet country!)by jeans - Ask a New Yorker :

Ok...I've been here since Sunday morning and I would not call this neighborhood drab...lots of families, people walking their dog...little Mom & Pop stores. Lots of diversity... I came upon a interesting historical site....last of the old dutch colonial farmhouses build in the 1700's. Located on the corner of Broadway and 204th, It is a museum but it was not yet open.by jeans - Ask a New Yorker :

Blister-Block...Sounds like a great product! I had never heard of it...I wish I read this last night! I walked all day in my trusty Eccos, and still got rubbed too much in a few spots. I only had powder to help, which it does tremedously. I'll get me some. I stopped by the Shake Shack today in the afternoon. The line was WAY too long for me. Also went by the Chelsea market. What are your favorite walking shoes? - 16 years ago
As I pack tonight I find myself in the same dilemma as with trips before. How do you balance out the desire to be stylish with the very real need to not be in pain after a few blocks of city walking? On my first trip to New York, I thought I had a comfortable pair of shoes, but I ended up hobbling into a Times Square shoe store in agony and came out with some cushy but unstylish Reeboks. Re: I'm so excited... - 16 years ago
Ok...we are down to the wire....two sleeps to go! This trip has been a challenge regarding logistics. I needed to go to Long Island for a day so found out how to buy LIRR tickets online...they SEND them to you via snail mail...how quaint! They arrived the same day as the apartment keys in Inwood. We found a place to rent senior scooters in Upstate for a fraction of what Scootaround wanted..by jeans - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: featherbed - 16 years ago
I suggest you go back to where you bought it so see if they sell Sheet Garters. They look like larger versions of the garters that used to hold up stockings. (or still do, on someone, I suppose...) Also called Sheet Suspenders... Don't know if they would work with a thicker feather materess, but it's worth looking into.by jeans - Ask a New Yorker :

Drab is not bad...blighted would be bad...What can I tell from a satellite pic, anyway? We will be west of Broadway...so that's great! Thanks for your re-assurance. Three weeks to go!by jeans - Ask a New Yorker :
Inwood - 16 years ago
Hi...can anyone tell me about the neighborhood of Inwood? I just looked at it from satellite pictures and it looked rather drab...industrial looking apartment houses. My friend is letting me use her apt. while she's gone. I would not think that her place would be in a bad neighborhood..not that I'm looking a gift horse in the mouth...I'm thinking more about my mom when she joinsby jeans - Ask a New Yorker :

I'm so excited I could just piddle! I just landed not only a presentation that will pay my way, BUT a free apartment in Manhattan!(a former client's.....it's in Inswood, but it's free and still in Manhattan!) I have some logistics to work out, but I'll be back in the city in four weeks! Oh Joy! I'll be on my own for a few days, then go up to Syracuse to pick upby jeans - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Cab drivers - 16 years ago
We actually asked a cabbie about that. He said that the fares were structured so that they made more money on short hauls rather than long...it was all about turnover. It sounded plausible. Aren't they on strike right now?by jeans - Ask a New Yorker :
Private Messages - 16 years ago
I attempted to use the Private Messages function but got either a wrong page or an error page. This was after I clicked on the person's name, wrote an email and it bounced. Is there a way to send a PM that I can't find? Thank you in advance.by jeans - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: First time in NY - 16 years ago
Check out The Cutting Room in the Flatiron District. Co-owned by Chris Noth (Sex in The City and Law & Order). We saw Joan Rivers there...she plays once or twice a month. She looked fabulous and was hilarious. They also have cool music. Trendy place. Have fun then come back and tell us about it so we can live vicariously through you!by jeans - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: I need a friend in New york - 16 years ago
How cool to see my old thread pointed out...yes that was fun. It would be great if anyone wanted to add to it.... BTW...I'm trying to talk my way back to The City...mix a little business with the pleasure of taking my mom to New York for the first time (and she is 80!). So after a bit of an absence, I'm lurking around on this board again. I've missed it.by jeans - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: cockroach! Please please Help! - 16 years ago
Well...they probably don't want to crawl on you anymore than you want them to, but this might help ease your fears. First, if there is a dust ruffle on your bed, remove it or tuck it up so it is not touching the floor. Tuck in any loose bedding that touches the floor also. Pull the head of the bed away from the wall. That leaves the four legs of the bed as the only route up to you.by jeans - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Where is SJP? - 16 years ago
When I was visiting last year I was doing the tourist thing...sitting on the stoop, my sister taking my picture... when I neighbor came by and said "You know, she lives just around the corner" He told us which building, but of course I can't tell you here..you might be a stalker :-). But maybe the chatty neighbor will!by jeans - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Making sense of NYC directions... - 16 years ago
I hear ya...there's nothing that screams TOURIST! more that climbing out of the subway, squinting in the light, looking from side to side trying to figure out which way to go. Add a map and that seals it! The good news is that New Yorkers are very helpful. I have had locals...of all walks of life... see my confusion and stop to offer genuine assistance and point me in the right direction.by jeans - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Cabs & Mexicans ... ? - 16 years ago
On my last trip (WAY too long ago), we talked to a friendly cabbie about that issue. He told us that they make more money doing several quick short hauls...it's about turnover, not long-haul.by jeans - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: The Anti-Shopper - 17 years ago
Thanks...I don't feel so alone now! I'll look at the site. I know that the high-end stores have personnel trained to sell you as much as they can from their collection. I would prefer a "free-agent". I'm frugal, but would be willing to pay for unbiased opinions and extenisve knowledge of the shopping terrain.by jeans - Ask a New Yorker :
The Anti-Shopper - 17 years ago
Ok..I have a burning question that comes up for me every time someone talks about the great shopping in NY. What if you HATE to shop??? There...I said it. I HATE to shop. However, I LOVE clothes and having new stuff in my closet (obviously, a rare occurrance), but I was born without the shopping gene....I walk into a department store and my eyes glaze over and I want out. Re: Footwear while touring new york - 17 years ago
I find it helps to change off every day...my Rebocks one day, my Ecco sandles the next. I paid over $100 for those Eccos...a record for me, but that was in 2003 and they still look brand new and as long as I have a little container of talc, I can walk all day in them.by jeans - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Fav NYC Movie - 17 years ago
You forgot my favorite....Working Girl! Last June when on the boat to Ellis Island, we passed the Staten Island ferry and I could hear that great Carly Simon theme song that opens the movie with the shot of the ferry...(and alas...the twin towers in the background) Of course, Harrison Ford is very scenic also...by jeans - Ask a New Yorker :

Article on Harlem In San Diego's paper this morning - 17 years ago
This article would not have caught my eye had we not taken a morning to walk through Harlem last June. We walked down 125th, and stood in front of the legendary Apollo. Even in the brightness of a summer morning, we could feel the energy of the great performers who got their start there. Then we had breakfast at Sylvia's....great meal & a great older neighborhood. We were told thaby jeans - Ask a New Yorker :
