Re: Best New York Moment - 15 years ago
I love it when this thread resurfaces to gather new stories. Oh, how I want to come back! Danielle, thank you for your wonderful, insightful story of personal growth in your first year as a New Yorker...it was very touching. Re: only NYC who has a forumsite "ask a..." like this? - 15 years ago
Hi there, I live in San Diego, California. It's a beautiful place to visit. Beaches, mountains, desert, & Mexico, all within easy reach. There is also Alliant International University. I have a connection there if you would like to learn more. I also have connections at San Diego State Unversity and University of San Diego. Palm Springs is less than 2 hours away.by jeans - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: Luggage Storage - 15 years ago
May 2008 I went to Macy's recently to ask about luggage storage for the afternoon. (I did tell them I had five hours to do nothing but shop before my flight.) They will keep the bag...AT NO CHARGE. Here's what you do. Take the escalator to the cellar, turn left at the bottom and you will see the sign for Coat Check. I saw quite a few bags in there. I would have used them, but my planby jeans - Ask a New Yorker :

I like to eat at "Rare". Great gourmet burgers...good wine..conversation with bartender & locals. Bleeker & Carmine. Bleeker Street Pizza was named best pizza by Food Network. Go into Palma on Cornelia for very reasonably priced Italian...fantastic decor and an ancient coach house in the back courtyard. Greenwich Village Food & Cultural Tour - 16 years ago
Last Sunday I took this tour and thoroughly enjoyed it. Mostly because the guide..an older guy who had lived in the Village for years...was so entertaining, funny and knowledgeable. I've wandered around the Village many times...followed a guidebook once, but to see it from the eyes of a local and to hear stories of residents, was very entertaining. Re: safe areas in inwood/wash heights - 16 years ago
I stay in Inwood on Seaman & 207th (WEST of Broadway) when I am in town...will be there again in two weeks. It is a working class neighborhood with lots of families out on the weekend. I felt safe walking two bocks from the subway to the apt. at night.by jeans - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: Cycle hire - 16 years ago
FYI--- The Central Park Loop is NOT flat. (who knew??) We rented bikes at The Boathouse...the least expensive one-speed cruisers...Had the kid at the booth told us there were hills, he could have easily upgraded us to 10-speeds for a few more dollars. I was huffin' & puffin' and pushing the bike up one long incline wondering where these dang hills came from.by jeans - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: 140's vs 200's - 16 years ago
I stayed in Inwood, at a friend's apartment..Seaman & 207th for a week. It was a great, safe little family-oriented neighborhood. Everything you needed was within a couple of blocks walking distance...subway at 207th & Broadway even had an elevator. Yes...it was a long train-ride into city center, so there were no quick mid-day trips back to the apt. I had arrived at Port Authby jeans - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Things to do in NYC on the night time...... - 16 years ago
The last time I visited with my sister, we did a Broadway show but also wanted something WAY off Broadway. We picked up a copy of The Village Voice, stopped at a coffee house in Greenwich and perused the announcements...some bizarre, and truly off-the wall. (Reading the descriptions aloud was entertainment in itself). We ended up at a small basement dive-bar for a hilarious X-rated Sock-puppetby jeans - Ask a New Yorker :

I'm sure you've thought of this, but can you get access to newspaper archives? I have no idea if they would be available online or if you have to visit a public library. I once had a library order microfilm from another site. It's very time consuming, but fascinating going back in time like that. What about police alumni type organizations? Re: Town car / sedan pick-up from EWR to Manhattan - 16 years ago
I booked Manhattan Vip Limo for a trip to JFK. $60 for a towncar says the website. The driver was early. I would suggest that you ask for an estimate of the toal charges to your destination, because after they added tolls, gratuity, surcharges and whatever, it was closer to $90.by jeans - Ask a New Yorker :

Ok...I've spent WAY TOO MUCH time on that site. I've re-traced our steps from the outdoor segment of the Chelsea Market/Meatpacking district tour. That is SO COOL! Just like in real life, I found myself going the wrong way on a on-way street. It felt like I was there! Then the system bogged down with too much traffic, said to come back later and invited me to visit Miami or Aspen! Thank you, Salsa for this great "escape"!by jeans - Ask a New Yorker :

Yeah....I figured as much. We tried to hail a cab for 15-20 minutes and while it was not raining hard and we all had umbrellas, we were getting cold and running out of time. He had us...we knew it. Taxis & Towncars - 16 years ago
I thought that I had once read here (or somewhere) that the black towncars were not allowed to pick up passengers off the street as taxis do. Last Thursday, it was raining and we had left Rockefeller Center...mom in her scooter...and tried to get a taxi to Tavern on The Green at 6:30 pm...(Yeah...Mission Impossible). A towncar stopped and offered to take us...scooter and all. Mom refused aby jeans - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: good dogs for living in small apartments? - 16 years ago
This is by no means a definitive answer, but after a week of walking the city, the most common dog I saw were pugs....usually in pairs . I was surprised, however by the number of LARGE dogs I saw. One was very unique in its size and coloring until I realized it was a shaved St. Bernard.by jeans - Ask a New Yorker :

The Chelsea Market Tour - EXCELLENT! - 16 years ago
The biggest hit of this trip in taking my 80 yr.old mom around New York was the Chelsea Market Tour. First of all..the market decor along with the artwork is unique in itself...it's gorgeous, creative and there's something to look at in every corner. It is located in the old National Biscuit Company building - AKA Nabisco. The cost was $40 per person...reservations must be made waby jeans - Ask a New Yorker :
