Re: Central Park Picnic Areas - 14 years ago
Nope - no shelters big enough. You can hide in the porch of the Dairy, in the Boathouse cafe, in the Arsenal or cafe by the Zoo, in the Castle (no picnics), under the awnings at the Delacorte, at the Dana center at Harlem Meer, in Cop Cot, under bridges or the Minton Arch by the Bethesda fountain, or pop into the Met Museum for a small donation have coffee and dry off :-) Bring umbrellas andby Elibrarian - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Marital Status - 14 years ago
No. Once you are married anywhere in the world, you cannot get married AGAIN to anyone else, without a divorce or a dissolution of the previous marriage. You must state, under oath, on the marriage license application, about any previous marriages and the whereabouts of any former (or current) spouses. However, people who are already legally married to each other, some of them at City Hallby Elibrarian - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Honeymoon in NY - 14 years ago
My short list of 'romantic' out-of-the-way places. The Cloisters, esp the gardens, and lunch at the New Leaf Cafe in Fort Tryon. A free Staten Island ferry ride and a walk to Snug Harbor, OR the sunset cruise on the Circle Line - hokey and silly, but glorious views at sunset. Be sure to bring your own gourmet picnic as the food is terrible. Get a $3 off coupon at the tourist officeby Elibrarian - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Best month to get married in New York - May or June - 14 years ago
We had 18 weddings this May in the park. Several were wet this year, which was quite unusual, as May is usually mild and lovely. I even wore gloves once. Then one was so hot (on Capstow bridge) that I burned the top of my head, and I think the bride was ready to faint, so we had to head into the trees. A planned wedding on the bridge was moved to the Dairy, because the sun was too hot. It was thby Elibrarian - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: The New York Rubbing Tour Coming Soon! - 14 years ago
I love industrial rubbings, and that would be great. Any brass plans? Plaques, reliefs, ecclesiastical sources? Hmm. Wondering about the mausoleums at Trinity up by 156th or Greenwood cemetery -- and maybe St Thomas or St Johns? or Stuyvesant church? hmmmby Elibrarian - Ask a New Yorker :
restrooms with power outlets - 14 years ago
I am often on the go in midtown all day, esp. in Central Park. I have a tiny hair curler - not butane - to prop up my drooping Danish bangs, and I need a washroom with an OUTLET. Some of my fave places for a quick freshup (see diagroogle.com for bathroom breaks) are now closed. I used to use the tiny downstairs bathroom at Tisserie (The Venezuelan coffee house on Union Square), and there is ONE wby Elibrarian - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Tides - 15 years ago
The tidal bore goes all the way up the hudson, and you can watch it from Hudson Park - we've done this at various location. But if you want to see the sea floor, you need a beach. Contact the New York Aquarium for expert advice. You can walk along the beach starting at the Aquarium at Coney Island two miles to Manhattan Beach (Manhattan Beach is horseshoe crab mating ground in May and Junby Elibrarian - Ask a New Yorker :

This is Mary, the Elibrarian of - it was a funny coincidence, reading Judie's post about getting married up in Toronto - because I actually DO marry people up in Toronto (grin), as well as in New York. It's only a hour away by plane. I also marry a lot of Canadians in Central Park, so the traffic goes both ways. Re: First time to New York, not much time but willing to see everything ^^ - 15 years ago
I used to know 3 victorian costume stores, but they've closed due to high rents. I'd ask the staff at the costume museums, to see if they know anyone selling out of their private collections. The FIT museum is free, but the Costume Institute at the Met is closed right now. Second the St John's notices - and Trinity Church as well. If you walk over the bridge to the World Financial Center (see the arts exhibit calendar for free events) you can look down on the construction. Also, here's the little newspaper for the residents who live around the WTC with notices of street and transit closing, news about the rebuilding, etc.by Elibrarian - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: New York at Christmas - 15 years ago
Hi Penny. I used to work in a big volunteer center - and we always got asked where to serve xmas and thanksgiving dinner. Actually - many agencies have the most volunteers on these days of the whole year -- they wish people would volunteer on OTHER days, but understand the wish to help. You can call 311 closer to the date, and ask where to help. The city website (nyc.gov) has a big list of placby Elibrarian - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: cheap musician for park ceremony - 15 years ago
There are buskers in Central Park who will certainly play for a donation. We've asked the saxphone guy, the clarinetist under the bridge by the Met, and we asked some hammer dulcimer players who were playing by the fountain to perform at a wedding this year, and then bought their CD bcuz they were wonderful. Here's a post with the dulcimer contact info. There are many conservatory grby Elibrarian - Ask a New Yorker :

see other posts on this topic, but: City Hall website: You need proof of birth (Passport) and Address (Drivers License) You can pay for the license by credit card now. You need at least ONE witness over 18. No one provides this for you. Here you go -- I plan to get the marriage licence online and then go into the offices on Friday and get it. Then go City Hall early on the Monday and fly home Monday night. This should work. You both have to go to City Hall together, to validate and collect the online license. Re: tenement museum - 15 years ago
I loved it - if you take the 3 tours first, you get to see all the apartments, then you can come back for the 'interactive' experience if you want to have the dramatic view. It's a time capsule, so it's quite a unique experience, especially with all the changes in the LES in the past few years. Re: Getting Married in New York - 15 years ago
Unlike Central Park, where you can apply online, the poor staff member at the Conservatory Garden has to handle the booking by herself (and it's only 1/4 of her job). It's not automated. I asked her about this requirement, and she said you just need to buy a money order in US funds (like a postal money order from Australia or Canada) and send it FedEx. Complimenti per il vostro matrimonio. Benvenuti a New York! Legally, you only need one witness for your wedding. The witness can be from any country, and must be over the age of 18. Often, your photographer can be your witness. You can ask your officiant to help find a witness. You can also ask the hotel concierge, a waiter, a tourist, or people having a picnic in the park. I am going from Toronto to NY next month for $12.50 on Megabus. (yep!) The travel is long, but they have wifi as long as your batteries last. The other option is JetBlue to Buffalo, often for $69 on sale - then the megabus at the Buffalo airport to Toronto Coach terminal. HI Zoe -- Here you go: If you don't need your license immediately after your wedding, (if you aren't going on a honeymoon immediately, or you aren't changing your name and your passport) then you can get your license in Brooklyn or even at Staten Island (have fun - take the ferry!)
