Re: weddings - 15 years ago
Hi Pauline. I'm sure many of us would be happy to try to help - how big is your wedding party? Where is your wedding? What kind of services do you want from your coordinator? It depends what kind of cuisine you want, as well, and whether you want restaurants recommended by location, style, price - or whether they have a private room, etc. Also, there are lots of brides on the kvetch boardby Elibrarian - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: What are the best websites for Broadway ticket discounts? - 15 years ago
I liked TDF - because they sent you lots of emails - and some for previews. Most anybody can qualify, but you do have to pay an annual fee. And some stuff you could only find by plowing through lots of BroadwayBox. I like Theatremania - you find weird things like Steve whatshisnames mentalist show at the Waldorf - and other nice things not on other sites. Maryby Elibrarian - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: Wedding witness - 15 years ago
Hi Raymond Actually, you CANNOT get anyone in the City Clerk's office to be your witness. You must provide at least one witness for your wedding. It is suggested that you have 2 witnesses on the form, but one is legally sufficient. They must come to the marriage bureau for the wedding ceremony and wait with you. They do NOT have to be there when you get your license. Anyone overby Elibrarian - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: New York wedding advice - 15 years ago
Hi everyone. It was a good idea, suggesting public places, but of course the NYPL rotunda on 42nd street charges about $20,000 <grin>. Those NY prices! You CAN rent small museums sometimes, such as the lovely Merchant's House in NOHO, and there are some very lovely non-profit places, though most are for bigger groups. here are some other ideas and a little post about some placeby Elibrarian - Ask a New Yorker :

Hi Paul - hello to Sheffield. It Mary again - I've had my coffee, and I'll try to help. City Hall does not have enough room for your party, as far as I know, though I don't know the regulations about the new space in Tweed Courthouse. It's also first come, first serve (you line up in the hall with your witnesses at wait your turn) and I've never seen a wedding party bby Elibrarian - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: butcher shop - 15 years ago
I used to raise my own chickens. The feet and wattles are what you need for really nice soup - in addition to necks. that's why coq au vin is so good. Also - air chilled, or it's full of water. I'd go to Brooklyn - Red Hook or Bayridge, to a Chinese poultry supply (my husband was a chef in Brooklyn). Nope, Ottomanellis is good for suckling pig - but not for weird bits. Adrian - you don't equate your rent in Montreal with your rent in NY - exchanges are simply that - they get your beauty and square footage, you get their zip code. The VAT (or GST - grin) is the LOCATION. You'll have to push the amenities you can offer people - I'd list the restaurants, the jazz, etc. Don't try and explain the bagels. (mmm st viateur mmmm....) Hi Sarah - so sorry no one's answered - but V Day is such a crush in NY - and the views will be rather dear - and booked. Here's a few - you can check some out on - also check menupages.com for the menus. - Above at the Hilton Times Square - looks out to 42nd street. - Asiate - in the Mandarin Oriental - Battery Gardens (faces New York Harbor) - Bouchon Bakery at the Time-Warnerby Elibrarian - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: NYC elope wedding in July-where? Help!?? - 15 years ago
Hi Earth - You can reserve a spot in the Park 30 days ahead, - but if it's small group, you can just meet at one of the gates, wander INTO the park together with the officiant, and choose your spot, by the lake, at the Castle, at the Bethesda Fountain or anywhere you like that day, it's really about your own ideas; whether you want to be secluded or don't mind a few tourists. Re: Getting Married in New York - 15 years ago
Lots of good wedding advice here now! And do check the archives. Basics on getting married are on the City Hall website, link below again. but they have not updated the website to reflect the fancy new digs at the Tweed Courthouse - and the new fee, which seems to be $60 (up from $25). Note the Conservatory Garden fee is $400, and photography is $100. the application page is here: Youby Elibrarian - Ask a New Yorker :

Adrian - If you've got good digs in Montreal - esp. anywhere in Vieux-Montréal or anywhere attractive, you can try exchanging it for somewhere in NY for a swap. Obviously, nobody's going to go north in winter, when they never plough away the snowbanks, as you know, and everybody lives underground - but try in the summer, when people can sit in YOUR outdoor cafes on St. Denis, and theyby Elibrarian - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Taxi or Car Service? - 15 years ago
Well, I just take the Long Island Railroad from Penn Station - about $5. It connects directly to the Air Train to JFK and avoids all the traffic. You can also just take the E to Jamaica and get the same Air Train for the cost of a subway fare $2 -. The Air Train is $5. No tipping, and the LIRR to the Air Train is 20 minutes. Re: Wedding venue in NYC for 30 guests? - 15 years ago
Hi Emma - Our December weddings in Central Park this year were mixed - the sunny days were bearable (but very nippy - even for couples from Yorkshire). You can always try Tavern on the Green - it's right in the park and walkable to your spots and you can have just drinks and a ceremony room, or the prix fixe dinner, which some people like to do for weddings. HI Keira Many Scots follow the Sikhs and wear plastic ones. If you have a real one, your problem will probably be getting it through customs/ airport security. Dunno about that part, even if packed in your luggage. Wonder what they do for Tartan week? You could actually contact the consulate and see about the protocol. Congrats! I Second the City Hall restaurant idea - they've always been nice to brides, and it's fun to have a City Hall wedding and a City Hall lunch. also, Anthony Bourdain's Les Halles Downtown is only a short walk away on John street - its like a Paris Bistro, of course. If you're Orthodox, you walk from sundown to sundown. NO travelling on the tubes. When they light the menorah in Central Park (from the cherry picker) the NYPD flies the chief rabbi home by helicopter so he gets there before technical sundown. Kelly! It's Mary! How nice to see your note -- isn't Beowulf wonderful? And he loved you guys. And of course Beth is the world's sweetheart. for info, you can also try hopstop.com Just plug in your termini and it will give you routes and commuting time. It also updates when they know the lines are down. But it won't update if there's any trouble on the tracks - that's just life. Or, as the announcer says "due to an Incident....". So always have re-route ideas in mind.
