Re: Wedding in New York - 15 years ago
HI Andrea Here are some more dinner ideas: One if by Land, Two if by Sea Tavern on the Green The Boat House in Central Park The top of the Beekman Hotel (great views of the East River, art deco) any little restaurant in Greenwich village, of course - try Cornelia Street, its one block long, but has lots of little restaurants - the Cornelia Street cafe, le Gigot, etc. I like it.by Elibrarian - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Getting married in new york - 15 years ago
Hi - Other people have nicely answered your questions, but here are a few more hints, just in case. The Manhattan marriage license bureau is located at 1 Centre Street, up the block from "City Hall"- and City Hall park. It will look familiar to you as the site of many Law and Order episodes. It is technically a "Borough Hall", but also sometimes mistakenly referred to as &by Elibrarian - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: New York at Christmas - 15 years ago
It depends on the age of the children - but here are some ideas: The Big Apple Circus, which runs in the plaza at Lincoln Center. An old fashioned circus in a tent - closer to the performers. Hokey and fun Windows to view: - Barneys, Lord and Taylor, Saks, Bloomies, Bergdorfs Skating - the rink at Bryant Park is better than the Rock Center one. But go up to the Top of the Rock for a betterby Elibrarian - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: can you book all of sheep's meadow for a wedding/reception? - 15 years ago
You can't book all the Sheep's meadow - unless you're Bon Jovi and have a big sponsor & are in with Bloomberg. And you can't bring anything IN (chairs, tents, anything that will make a mark in the grass). So location really depends on the SIZE of your wedding, and whether you are considering an outdoor venue in the city and a reception space at the same location. Hi Karen Congratulations! I think you'll get lots of help on the hairdresser - considering the "Dominican Hair salon" thread on this board!! (lots of other salons there, not just Dominican). But ask your concierge for advice as well, they'll tell you one in the neighborhood. But you can also go to Macys, Saks, (Brendels?) who all have hair salons. Re: marrying in New York - 15 years ago
HI Andrea - this is Mary - I believe you're going to be married by my friend Beth! I was just worried that other people will be trying to get their licenses in a hurry on Dec 30 so I wrote this quick post. This is a VERY VERY busy day - almost as bad as Valentine's Day. If possible, get there when it opens at 8:30 -or better, the day before (they close at 3:45). BRING ALL ID and be pby Elibrarian - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Hotel in Brooklyn? Long Island City? - 15 years ago
craigslist -- people. NEVER rent a room on craigslist unless you really check it out. NEVER send paypal or deposit unless you absolutely confirm the ROOM EXISTS and the person renting it LIVES THERE. Craigslist is famous for 'non-existent' rooms. People just put up pix of any old apartment, tell you it's in Manhattan, and that they will leave the keys with the 'doorby Elibrarian - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: distance from New York City to Ontario Canada, driving - 15 years ago
It depends on your route. about 490 miles, or 9-10 hours. I take the palisades to 17, and go up to the thruway and over to the QEW at Lewiston. It takes me 10-11 hours, depending on customs and breaks. If you take 81 to I 90, it's faster - but not as pretty.by Elibrarian - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: wedding spot and dinner - 15 years ago
This is Mary - who often marries people in Central Park :-). January is a tossup for weather - we have had nice sparkly winter weddings, and then we've frozen our fingers off. The easiest thing to do for the ceremony is to decide which END of the park you want, then meet your officiant by that gate, and wander into the park and pick a spot. The leaves are gone (except the Pinetum and Cedar Hiby Elibrarian - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: suit hire/florists for wedding - 15 years ago
Hi Emma Morning suits are a rare commodity in NY. Some tux rental places do carry them, and I see that Baldwins DOES rent morning attire: I'm a marriage officiant, and most of my grooms wear a lightweight business suit. NYorkers getting married generally opt for business attire, though I recently wrote a funny piece wishing that grooms would return to summer whites a la F. Scott Fiby Elibrarian - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Weddings at Moran's Chelsea/Battery Park - 15 years ago
HI -- I'm a wedding officiant, and have married couples at Moran's - and agree that that staff is nice, the food is ample and it's a friendly location. You have to know that you're in an Irish sport bar/pub, and the tv will be on, and there will be fried things and the room at the back is dark. They do have chairs, and you can tart it up with tulle and flowers. We also diby Elibrarian - Ask a New Yorker :

To the people asking about City Hall and witnesses -- Yes, you can now pay by credit card - otherwise, a money order for $35, from a chemist/ drugstore. Often a photographer acts as your witness. You only need one witness. Most are willing to sign the license. Otherwise, ask your officiant if they can provide a witness. Your passport has the record of your birth. Re: NYC elope wedding in July-where? Help!?? - 15 years ago
Congratulations! I am actually a Marriage officiant - so I get asked this question a lot < grin >. There are some important things to know about finding a spot - Parks are great, but there is very little covered space. If bad weather looms, try your hotel room, tip the concierge for an empty penthouse, or find a small restaurant with a private room or a little back garden. And some parby Elibrarian - Ask a New Yorker :
