oh, boy, Dave and Busters? Really? You can do better than that. The other night I was at the Maritime Hotel bar...give that a try. Or, maybe Coffee Shop on Union Square.by Kelly - Ask a New Yorker :

that's a question I haven't seen on this forum before! I don't think NYC has it's own special cuss words...just the usual like anywhere else!by Kelly - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Need some NY love - 13 years ago
What makes it home? Well, simply living here for 12 years makes it home. Why do I want it to be my home? Because there is always something going on, something new, there are so many interesting people and ideas, so much action. I also like that you can just be yourself, you can be anonymous if you want to, people leave you alone. Some might not like that, but I do.by Kelly - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Cosmetics and Clothes - 13 years ago
Salsa is right, just go into macys or sephora and they'll do your makeup for you...the expectation is that you will buy a thing or two, though. For dresses, I'd usually head up to Bloomingdales, where you are sure to find something, although J crew isn't bad. I was just looking for a dress for my sister's wedding and found one I liked (and bought) at kenneth cole, actually.by Kelly - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: the best Italian place? - 13 years ago
I had dinner last night at a place called I Sodi, on Christopher St in the village, and it was excellent, and reasonably priced as well. It was delicious...the olive oil in particular was so yummy I think you could drink a glass of it, I had a polenta/cheese appetizer that was awesome, and pasta with meat sauce for dinner which was also super tasty. Kennedy agrees, it was great. We got a giftby Kelly - Ask a New Yorker :

I don't know of a particular store, but if I were looking for them, I'd go to 14th St/Union square and start walking down broadway. by the time you get to Broome St, I'm sure you will have found a shop selling them.by Kelly - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: tenement museum - 13 years ago
I finally went to the tenement museum today, did "the Moores" tour, and it was pretty good, glad I finally went. Definately do get tickets in advance on the website, the tours were all sold out when I arrived there so glad I had my tickets already. The shop there is a great place to buy all sorts of new york books, fiction and nonfiction, and kids books too. I wouldn't bring yby Kelly - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: restaurants good for vegans AND non-vegans/vegetarians alike - 13 years ago
we were at Candle 79 today, a friend was having his "wedding reception" there. They got married a couple weeks ago in Texas and had a party for their NY people today. Anyway, people were raving about the place and everyone loved the food. I was so-so about it, but then again I'm a super picky eater, especially when it comes to veggie things. We were just having appetizers anywaby Kelly - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: Shop questions - 13 years ago
you don't need to go to jersey gardens to buy CDs or converse, for goodness sakes. you will find converse everywhere you look. CDs? There are some great stores in the village. Kim's, for instance. Jr's : (it's right by ground zero, in case you will be in that neighborhood) Rebel Rebel at 319 Bleecker in the west village. don't spend one of your NYC-days gby Kelly - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: Hotel Search - 13 years ago
what do you mean, you have had no luck? What is the problem? there are a zillion hotels here where you could get a full size bed in a non sketchy area. Is it a budget problem, and if so, what are you looking to pay? Any particular area you want to be in?by Kelly - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: upper east side versus upper west side - 13 years ago
I think they would be great places to live, if you can afford it! Expect very high prices.by Kelly - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: upper east side versus upper west side - 13 years ago
more transportation options (subway) on the upper west side. some friends of mine live on upper east side, way east, and walk 15 min to the subway, a real drag. upper west has a more family-ish vibe, lots of shops and restaurants, neighborhood-y feel, in my opinion. I'm sure others will come on with opinions. I'd pick upper west over upper east, pesonally. plenty of nice, safe areby Kelly - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Best restaurants on a budget - 13 years ago
the meatball shop is a reasonably new (6 mos. old) restaurant, lower east side. Super tasty and inexpensive. Get the parmesan cream sauce, it is delicious. you choose your meatballs from a selection of about 4 types ($7) and a side ($4) like spaghetti, polenta, risotto, etc. went there the other night, it was packed but we sat at the bar and got right in. will go back, for sure.by Kelly - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: a cool place for dinner - 13 years ago
Freeman's, mentioned above, is a good spot: I just had my niece and nephew in town (age 12 and 10) and they loved pizza at Lombardi's on spring st and across the street, Rice to Riches for all kinds of rice pudding. We went and ate at both places twice while they were here. what about spice market? or maybe better for kids and certainly cheaper, Sea : for lunch try Peanby Kelly - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: Where is the highest point in Manhattan? - 13 years ago
for a great night-time view, I think you should go to the brooklyn heights promenade...it's GREAT. It was one of the very first things I saw during my first visit to New York, years ago, and after I saw this I decided I MUST MOVE TO NYC! and I did! it's not high up, but a terrific view, nonetheless.by Kelly - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Foodies delight - 13 years ago
pulling up a very old "foodie" thread because of the restaurant I went to last night with a friend visiting from Milwaukee. She always brings me to restaurants I've never tried before, she does all this research before she visits to see what places she wants to try. See the thread above mentioning Stanton Social...that's where she brought me last time (very good)...this timeby Kelly - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Wedding witness - 13 years ago
hi shelly, I'm kennedy's wife! We got married at the courthouse in brooklyn. Wear whatever you like. I saw people in "real" wedding dresses, and also some in jeans. I wore a nice dress (not a wedding dress) and kennedy wore a suit. Sure, bring flowers, why not!? Re: Homeless people - 13 years ago
I've very rarely experienced a homeless person in nyc actually coming up to me on the street asking for money...normally they stay where they are and don't approach you (except maybe on the subway when they come through). In any case, as others have said, do what you want, nothing more or less. The other day I gave half of my giant Katz deli sandwhich, which was untouched, to a homelesby Kelly - Ask a New Yorker :
