day trip from the city to Beacon, NY - 11 years ago
here's an idea for a day trip out of the city... Go up to Beacon, NY. We did this on Saturday and it was a nice day away. Take the metronorth from Grand Central up to Beacon...the trip takes about 1 hr and 20 minutes. It's a pretty train ride, especially this time of the year when the leaves are turning colors. You can walk a short distance to the "main street" and have aby Kelly - Ask a New Yorker :
restaurant good for vegans and non-vegans - 11 years ago
I found another! Station at 166 N. 7th St in Williamsburg, Brooklyn - right outside the 7 train stop at bedford ave. I had braised beef short ribs while my vegan friend had something I can't even identify, but he loved it and I loved mine too. the service was a little iffy, I think the waitress was on her first day of ever being a waitress, but other than that it was good.by Kelly - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Manhattan or Brooklyn - 11 years ago
I'd just stay in one place. If you are in manhattan it's easy enough to just take the subway in and out of brooklyn. easier than changing hotels!by Kelly - Ask a New Yorker :

some friends are coming into town this week and they've booked us on a tour of Yankee Stadium...that would be a good idea for an activity with kids, if they're into baseball, wouldn't it?by Kelly - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Restaurants in Greenwich Village - 11 years ago
Cornelia Street Cafe would be a good spot too. It's a cute little place on a cute street in the village. You can sit outdoors (in front) if the weather is nice, or else there is plenty of room inside. The food is delicious and reasonably priced. My husband and I had dinner there the other night and the bill was about $110 before tip. Two appetizers (recommend the hummus plate, it was reby Kelly - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Midsummer Night Swing at Lincoln Center - 11 years ago
that was so much fun, it was last night. Definitely see Losers Lounge if you are in town, they play most often at Joe's Pub. But, the midsummers night swing at lincoln center was a really fun atmosphere, good stuff.by Kelly - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: beach - 11 years ago
Long beach isn't bad at all. You can get there in about one hour on a direct train from Penn Station. you can buy a ticket from the LIRR that gives you your round trip train and admission onto the beach for $21. The beach can be crowded on the weekends especially, but its a decent crowd of non-rowdy, well behaved people. the beach is clean and the water is fine to go in and swim. great fried chicken - 11 years ago
I had some great fried chicken last night, in williamsburg, brooklyn. At the commodore, at Havemeyer and Metropolitan...it was delicious and cheap, and they have good drinks too. Yummy, I have to go back for more.by Kelly - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: good trendy restaurants - 11 years ago
I tried this place out yesterday: The Dutch 131 Sullivan St at Prince St in SoHo both my husband and I really liked it...everything was delicious. The eggplant dip as a starter was excellent, as was the summer salad. My steamed halibut was super yummy and my husband loved the trout.by Kelly - Ask a New Yorker :

ABC Kitchen isn't that far away from the waldorf astoria...on the east side at least, on 18th St, so it would be a quick trip down there. I went there the other night with some friends and it was quite good. All local, organic, environmentally-conscious kind of food from Jean-Georges Vongerichten. make a reservation far in advance!by Kelly - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Great Reasonable NY restaurants - 11 years ago
hi Oracle, about Miranda (just saw this now)...it's not tiny tables so close together, it was comfortable. Found another place yesterday which is more like "cheap eats" than "reasonable". It was really good....Caracas Arepas Bar on E. 7th St between first avenue and avenue A. It was Yummy! Now, this place was crowded little tables very close to one another, and theby Kelly - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: NY Outer Boroughs - What to see & do?? - 11 years ago
I can't believe I've lived here for 14 years and did not go to the New York Botanical Gardens in the bronx until yesterday! what a great place to visit...right now they have a special exhibit where they replicate Monet's gardens and it was really beautiful, but the whole grounds are very very nice. the place is huge. It's the perfect place to go on a beautiful summer day.by Kelly - Ask a New Yorker :

if the person has a dog, one of those little velcro bags that holds dog poo bags, and goes around the leash or collar of the dog. we just got a dog and its hard to remember to bring bags with when going on a walk. here is a leash with the dog bags attached: always read on the subway, so books or a kindle or something like that is a useful gift. a picnic basket for picnics in centralby Kelly - Ask a New Yorker :

death of a salesman - broadway - 12 years ago
anyone coming to visit and looking for a show to see - saw death of a salesman last night and it was excellent. phillip seymour hoffman was terrific. the best play I've seen. went to DB Bistro Moderne on 44th street before the show...it was OK, wouldn't rush back, but as far as a pre-theater restaurant goes, I've certainly been to worse places. they have a prix-fixe menu for $45by Kelly - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: Segway experience/hire - 12 years ago
yikes, using a segway on the sidewalks in manhattan! Seems dangerous and would be difficult with the crowds. you'd probably be annoyed with it quickly (as would everyone else around you, sorry). I've just been googling about this topic and read that actually they're illegal in new york city.by Kelly - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: Is the Long Island beach safe at night? - 12 years ago
I'm trying to imagine why you'd want to be at the beach from midnight to 6am. {DA8E2736-5A34-4E0D-9EBD-228AB63E425C} that page may help you with some information. Are you asking about the safety of swimming during those hours, or just in general is it safe, like a low-crime area? personally, wouldn't do a lot of swimming at night like that. Re: Money saved up, can I move to Brooklyn or Queens? - 12 years ago
well, you don't really say how much you've saved up, but I'm sure you can find something affordable in a decent area of brooklyn or queens. Do you know which areas you'd like to live in? You'll probably need to come up with at least two months rent and possibly a broker's fee of about 12% of a year's rent - that is, if you go on and get your own place.
