Re: Moving to East 72nd Street next month! What's the area like in your opinion? - 12 years ago
The crosstown M72 stops at nearly every block (I think it skips Park). Have a look at the map: Bus stops aren't noted on the maps, but figure every block for crosstown buses and every 3-4 blocks for local uptown/downtown buses. If you're going to 5th Ave., walking from York will take about 15-20 minutes, which is about the same time as waiting for a bus that's going to stopby Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :

Welcome to the hood! The UES has a lot of luxury apartments and townhouses, but also probably the largest stock of walk-up tenements, so wealthy families and young professionals live in the area. Second Ave. is the hub of nightlife, with lots of pubs, concentrated a bit north of where you are, in the 80s-90s. Your area is also one of the most expensive for food. It wasn't about her message, Salsa. It was about her anger, misdirected toward Kenney. If someone starts a conversation about your protest, you ought to be respectful and be able to talk intelligently about your position, whatever it is. (I'm angry about a lot of things too, so I understand why there's more than one message.)by Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :

Hi Kelly, For some reason, AANY is telling me a word in my post has been banned from use, but I can't figure out which one. Anyway, I've copied the message and links I typed, and sent them as an email to you. Hope it helps.by Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Great Reasonable NY restaurants - 12 years ago
What a disappointment! Sorry to hear that. I had an amazing lunch yesterday at an old favorite, Artisanal. Instead of my usual fondue, I tried their "Frenchie" sandwich -- grilled brie with mushrooms and truffles. Thought I died and went to heaven. This might be a bit off-topic, since it's not a cheap sandwich at $19. But definitely worth it.by Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Ask a New York Theater Critic - 12 years ago
Of course you're a theater critic -- you know what you like, what else is there? I liked parts of Relatively Speaking but agree with you on the whole. I liked the opener, with the guy in the asylum, but didn't see the point in adding on the big about his family. And I loved, loved Elaine May's play for about 10 minutes, and then it had nowhere to go. But Marlo Thomas was wonderby Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :

I'm all for the Occupy Wall Street protesters. But, Tracy, you ought not judge people by what they're wearing, even if it's a suit. If the purpose of your holding a sign is to get your message out there, then have a message and be able to talk about it. Be polite to the curious, and they'll be open to what you have to say.by Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Getting to MH at night. - 12 years ago
The good news is that it's an easy trip. Take the Airtrain to Sutphin Blvd., where you connect to the subway. You want the Manhattan-bound E train. Get off at West 4th Street and transfer for either the Downtown B or D, and get off at Grand Street. Your hotel is two short blocks from there. I wouldn't worry about safety at that hour, but I would ride in the middle subway car of tby Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: Breakfast Buffet and evening attractions - Feb - 12 years ago
How many days/nights will you be in New York, and what activities are already planned? Will there be other adults? The best plan is to split up into groups of 5-6, depending on what the kids feel like doing. Have they expressed any interest in planning their trip and what they would like to do here? What are their interests? My guess is you need to fill more than one hour between dinneby Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Breakfast Buffet and evening attractions - Feb - 12 years ago
Buffets aren't popular in New York, and I don't think you'll find any breakfast buffets except perhaps in one of the big hotels. There are plenty of coffee shops in every neighborhood where you can get inexpensive breakfasts. I would ask the hotel concierge to recommend nearby places you could contact directly to arrange your breakfasts. It's going to be very difficult toby Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Breakfast ! - 12 years ago
Lots of choices. One of my favorites is the Belgian chain, Le Pain Quotidien. They don't serve a cooked American breakfast, but have the best pastries and coffee. They have several nearby locations you can look up on menupages.com, but I know there's one at 58th St. and 7th Ave. My favorite breakfast at LPQ is a bowl of coffee and a simple buttered baguette....delicious! Re: Budget Hotel/Midtown Manhattan. - 12 years ago
Smart move to avoid the dreaded Carter!!! Hotel prices change weekly, so it would help if you would give your dates. That said, $100 is very low (and taxes add another ~15% to your hotel bill). Unless you're looking at hostels, forget Manhattan. There are bargains to be had though. Have a look at Long Island City hotels. This is a neighborhood in Queens just across the river from midtoby Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: 21 yr old girl commuting to new york for a week from nj for bussiness - 12 years ago
It's very easy to take the subway. You'll want the Downtown #1 to 23rd St., which leaves you a couple of blocks from your address. But it's a short distance and you could also easily walk, it'll take you about 15 minutes. If you are taking a taxi, go to the taxi line on the 7th Ave. side of Penn Station, which heads downtown. That's a long way off, so you have lots of time to plan. The Ladies Pavillion is a wonderful location. I don't know Joanna Fernades, but I was at a lovely ceremony at the Ladies Pavillion that was officiated by Rev. Leslie, and I would highly recommend him. It was a very personalized, beautiful ceremony. I'm not sure I understand your question about how long a walk itby Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Trip to NY - Need advice in which area to stay? - 12 years ago
If you're flying out of JFK, it makes no sense to pick a hotel in New Jersey. There are very good budget hotels in Long Island City, which is a neighborhood of Queens just across the East River from midtown Manhattan. Pick a hotel that's near the subway and you can be in Manhattan in 10-15 minutes. Well-reviewed hotels include The Verve, Holiday Inn Manhattan View, and others. Here&by Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: laundromat in Tribeca? - 17 years ago
It's getting more difficult to find self service laundries, they just don't have the space. The nearest one to me is too far to shlep my laundry. While the service laundries are a bit more expensive -- but not much -- the one I use does a better job than I do, and I've gotten used to getting everything back folded to the same size, whether it's a duvet cover or a wash cloth.by Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :

I only wish we had the same regulations. I'm on yahoo mail, which has an excellent filter and separates the junk into a separate folder. Re: Living in NYC - 17 years ago
Agreed, most of Manhattan is unaffordable, but then if you have a roommate, it's a totally different story. I live in a one-bedroom apt. in a walk-up bldg. on the UES, and have been here for quite a while. My building has 20 apts., half are studios (one room, kitchenette and bathroom) and half are one bedrooms, like mine. Absolutely! I'm out of commission for the next week or so, but then I'll be ready to roar. And, yes, the seats went absolutely flat on Eos. Re: Waldorf or Westin Time Square - 17 years ago
There's no question that the Westin is far better than the Waldorf. However, it's right in the middle of the action. You literally cannot walk outside your hotel without being in the midst of millions. I would think it'd be oppressive after a day. I would stay totally away from the Times Square area.
