Re: Broadway - 17 years ago
I agree. Phantom is a wonderful show, but men hate it! I'd try Spamalot or Avenue Q. Whichever you pick, you need to get your tickets right away. First stop should be www.broadwaybox.com to see if there are any discounts out there (might be for Avenue Q, but I doubt there are discounts for Spamalot).by Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: All Souls Church on Lexington Ave - 17 years ago
I finally walked over to the church. There was one wedding party leaving, so they asked that I not take photos. And they were expecting a second wedding today. Anyway, I just peeked in, and it's very pretty. They gave me a brochure with lots of photos, and a separate flyer on weddings. I'd be happy to mail it all out to you, just need an address.by Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Christmas in New York - 17 years ago
I like the store windows. Start at Macy's (34th & Broadway), then walk over a few blocks to Lord & Taylor (the best... 5th Ave. at 38th St.). Continue up 5th Ave. all the way up to FAO Schwarz (58th St.). You'll pass the NY Public Library, the Rockefeller Center Promenade, Saks 5th Ave., St. Patrick's Cathedral, Cartier, Takashimaya, Henri Bendel, Tiffany's, Bergdorby Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :

I haven't forgotten you. It just was raining all last weekend so I didn't make a special trip. I'll get there this weekend.by Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Hotel in Paris - 17 years ago
Pat, I've stayed a few times in the budget hotel L'Esperance. It's in the 5th arr., a couple of short blocks from the Metro, and just off rue Mouffetard, where the daily food market is. Sorry I don't have the web site handy, but check on tripadvisor.com. L'Esperance is owned by an interesting couple -- real characters.by Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: how do you define an expert? - 17 years ago
How do you define a New Yorker? I'm born here, and hereby use my authority to grant the KMs, Daisiegee, Salsa, Marea, and a few others the title of New Yorker, by virtue of their knowledge, insight into the city, wit, charm, and CIVILITY! So, there!by Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: New York City Marathon - 17 years ago
Absolutely a fabulous time to come. It's great to see the elite runners, but even better to cheer on those runners at the end of the pack. Lunch at SEA has to be wonderful, too! If you can manage a hotel that weekend, you're in luck.by Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :

Natasja, I see you've posted on at least three travel forums. Have you sent an email to St. Patrick's? When you get a response from them, would you mind sharing the information on askanewyorker, virtual tourist and tripadvisor? Your research might help others.by Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :

I don't know anything about that company. Just because the web site might be well designed, it doesn't mean the company is reliable. But unless I knew that Harlem neighborhood better, I would stay elsewhere.by Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: All Souls Church on Lexington Ave - 17 years ago
It's just a few blocks from me. I'll walk over there, probably tomorrow, and have a look inside. It's nice from the outside though. (I'm not much of a church-goer!)by Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Where's the place to go for cheap tickets??? - 17 years ago
Each show sells through an exclusive ticket agent, usually telecharge or ticketron. Broadwaybox.com does not sell tickets, rather, they give you a discount code that you then use when you order through telecharge or ticketron. Just so you know that you're using secure sites. I work two blocks from Times Square, but I buy tickets through the services rather than go to TKTS. First, youby Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :

I don't know it, but if I find myself in the neighborhood I can take a look. Do you have the address? What made you choose this particular church?by Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: looking for hostess jobs in the nyc - 17 years ago
You'll get better info from someone actually in the business, but I think most people get their jobs by pounding the pavement. Especially with hostessing, restaurants want a certain look, so they want to see you. Good luck!by Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :

Nice site. Hope it grows, as I didn't find many reviews. It's very like menupages.com, which I've been using. KMs, I just know you're having a fantastic time. Can't wait to see you all golden and beautiful. Poi? Feh!by Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :

That must be Gray's Papaya. I recommend their "recession special" -- two hot dogs and a medium drink (go for the papaya), $2.75 and delicious. There's one on the corner of 6th Ave. at 8th St., and one at 72nd St. & Broadway. Also at 37th St. at 8th Ave.by Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: wedding meal - 17 years ago
Are you looking for a private room? What sort of budget? The most frequently recommended location is the beautiful River Cafe. No private rooms but many wedding dinners. Take a look at their menu on www.rivercafe.com. It's on the Brooklyn side of the Brooklyn Bridge, so you'd need two cars to get there. It's worth the effort though. There are many options nearer the park.by Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: Windsor Terrace - 17 years ago
If you're looking to relocate, you can only do so much research. What you really need to do is take a sublet, so you'll have a base from which to explore the neighborhoods. That way you'll be sure the "vibe" is right for you.by Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: Restaraunts - 17 years ago
The latest in hip are the restaurants of the Meatpacking District. Try Morimoto, Del Poso, Buddakan, or the ever-reliable and fabulous Spice Market. You might have better luck booking on opentable.com, though not all restaurants subscribe. I wouldn't call Telepan "hip," but the food is incredible! Google it to find their web site.by Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: in NYC with a teenager son - 17 years ago
Central Park is the best place to be for the new year! There's a midnight road race, so if that's your thing, check with the New York Road Runner's Club (I'm not sure of the web site, but it's easily found on google). Or, join the group at Bethesda Terrace for the midnight fireworks. It's not insane, as Times Square is. I typically go to a late dinner, and then wby Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Shows & Films - 17 years ago
You can google the mayor's office for film & tv. I think you're able to find out what movies are currently being filmed, but they won't give out a location schedule. But as you explore the neighborhoods, you're likely to run into a photo shoot or a film shoot.by Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Fifth Avenue at 120th Street - 17 years ago
I'm not totally familiar with that part of Harlem, but offhand it wouldn't be my choice to live. Tompkins Square Park is in what's known as the East Village. It's become a young, hip area. Very lively bar scene. As for pre-war, you'll see that a lot here. Pre-WW2 buildings are very desirable, as the rooms are generally larger, the walls between apartments are thickby Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :
