Re: where is great to go for breakfast - 17 years ago
I haven't been there, but everyone raves about Ess-a-Bagel, on Third Ave. between 50th-51st Streets. It's just a neighborhood place, nothing fancy. If you're looking for fancy, stroll up to Norma's, in Le Parker Meridien Hotel on W. 57th St. between 6th-7th Aves. Go early, and not on the weekend, because it's popular. A block from Norma's is the Brooklyn Diner,by Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :

I need a new computer! This ancient machine hasn't got enough memory to run videos, or even most photos. And my office computer is firewalled from AANY. Geez, I feel like a cave woman.by Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Help - - - Edison or Skyline??? - 17 years ago
Of those two, I'd pick the Edison. The Skyline is too far west. While the rooms are probably a bit nicer at the Skyline, the only reason I can see staying there is the discounted parking.by Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: New York for New Years Eve - 17 years ago
Yes, the best way to celebrate is with a nice family meal, then stroll into Central Park. The easiest access is from Fifth Ave. at 72nd Street. Head to Bethesda Terrace along with the other celebrants. It's lots of fun, very safe, and so much more civilized than the insanity of Times Square. New York used to celebrate "First Night" with all kinds of family-themed (non-alcoholby Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: Hotel Belleclaire - 17 years ago
The neighborhood is lovely. I haven't read through the reviews, but while you're browsing them, you might want to also compare reviews of hotels nearby. The Lucerne gets great reviews. The Excelsior gets mixed reviews, but the negatives seem to be about unfriendly service rather than about the rooms or the hotel itself. Location is outstanding. By the way, congratulations!by Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Do New Yorkers love Starbucks coffee? - 17 years ago
I became addicted to Starbucks many years ago, at a time when I was frequently in the Bay Area. I'd bring back sacks of beans and keep them in my freezer. So when they started opening outlets in New York, that was me dancing in the streets! I've tried to like Dunkin Donuts, but it just doesn't cut it. Great donuts though. Gotta have my Starbucks (or fourbucks, or charbucks).by Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Roosevelt Island and McHales - 17 years ago
"Look out Naked Cowboy!" Omigod, I'm shuddering already! And a little shocked that you're going to venture back to the Rainbow Grill. I was a little disappointed with the Burger Joint because I can't get my favorite bacon & blue cheese burger. Still, I like the fact that it looks like a roadside shack but it's hidden behind a curtain at the Parker Meridien,by Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Xmas/New Year in NY - 17 years ago
Don't plan too much on your arrival day, as you're likely to be very tired, especially if you have a big meal. I'd recommend strolling your neighborhood and maybe having a quiet dinner (with a birthday toast, of course). While you're coming at the most beautiful time of year, it's also going to be the busiest, so you'll need to make dinner reservations for your Chrby Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: hotels and new years eve - Help!! - 17 years ago
The Waldorf is in a business district, so only busy during the weekdays. The rest of the time it's quiet and the neighborhood is charmless. You'd have to walk a few blocks east to find neighborhood restaurants and such. The Michelangelo always gets well reviewed, and their rooms are considered large by NYC standards. But it's in midtown, too near to the insane Times Square crowby Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: East 87th between 1st and York Avenue - 17 years ago
If you're going to be cooking in the apt., stop by the Vinegar Factory on 92nd between 1st and York. Expensive but fabulous, and a great selection of prepared food if you just want to have stuff on hand to nuke. Definitely stroll along the river, by Carl Schurz Park. Gracie Mansion is just north of the park; it's the mayoral residence, though our current mayor owns a townhouse on 7by Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Pre-theater Restaurants - 17 years ago
Congratulations on winning the tickets. Within a few blocks, I'd recommend two Italians -- ViceVersa (Northern) and Maria Pia (Southern). Ruby Foo's is a glitzy "pan Asian" that's very popular. There's another "pan Asian" across the street from the theater, Bluechili. There are many, many more. Check www.menupages.com for reviews and to see sample menuby Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: Firefighters - 17 years ago
New York does have the best looking firemen! I doubt you'd find them hanging out, though. They don't drink when they're on call, and when they're off, they head home. (Well, except for St. Patrick's Day, but that's another story.) Why don't you stop by a firehouse? Ask to take a photo with them, maybe ring the bell on the truck.by Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :

I like your walking tour. Don't forget to bring them to St. Paul's when you come from the World Trade Center site. www.saintpaulschapel.org And I love your pizza tour! I try to take tourists to grocery stores, too, especially our tiniest, crappiest ones. Re: best Hotel just outside of Manhattan - 17 years ago
Just keep in mind that you won't be going back to your NJ hotel during the day to change clothes, rest, or drop off packages. It could prove very inconvenient if you want to go out at night in NY to theater, music, dinner, etc. I understand everyone has a budget they've got to consider, but you also don't want to be too inconvenienced on a vacation.by Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: wedding day in NY - 17 years ago
You're cutting it pretty close! You don't actually get married in city hall (where the mayor's office is), but in the Municipal Building at 1 Centre Street. Unfortunately, I don't have the web site bookmarked on my home computer, so you'll need to do a google.com search to find the exact rules for what you need to bring with you. Anyway, you must go to the Marriage Licby Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: No Garbage Disposals? - 17 years ago
It's just what you're accustomed to. I've never had a disposal -- or a dishwasher. I scrape the dishes in the garbage before I wash them, then carry out the trash. It's not so difficult. I wouldn't think of putting food in the sink.by Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :

If you go to the Hershey store on Broadway, just north of Times Square (I think it's at 48th St.), you can have a message put up in lights. Do it while she's shopping for chocolate, then have her go outside at the right moment. Have your camera ready. Happy anniversary!by Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: what should I do with my german friends when they come? - 17 years ago
There are so many great paths through the park. If the weather cooperates, I'd go Thursday or Friday to avoid the crowds. Go see the zoo, then walk up the east side to the Conservatory Water (model boat pond). If the Pale Male fan club is out (he's usually sitting on a bench on the west side of the pond -- you'll see the telescope), they might like taking a peek and learning hisby Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :

Are you solely responsible for the group, planning all their activities and transportation? What kinds of things do they like -- architecture, history, etc. Hopefully you'll have nice weather to do a couple of walking tours. The German lower east side, and of course, Yorkville. I took a tour of 8th St. & St. Mark's many years ago that focused on the German history of the area.by Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :

The best reviewed budget hotels near the theater district are the Belvedere, Novotel, Radio City Apts., Hotel 41. The Salisbury isn't far and also gets excellent reviews.by Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: when to book tickets? - 17 years ago
Some long-running shows are frequently offered at discount. To get an idea which they will likely be, browse broadwaybox.com. You can't buy them too far in advance, but it'll give you an idea anyway. The top shows aren't ever offered on discount, and you should buy them as far ahead as possible. I don't think they're on sale before six months, but you should check. Aby Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :
