Re: washington to Nyc. by greyhound buses - 16 years ago
Train is definitely the best option. However, it is expensive. It is as much as flying. Keep in mind that you don't really save a lot of time flying versus the train because the airports in New York are usually delayed and you have to get to the airport early to allow enough time to check in and get through security. Also, you must factor in the time it takes to get from the city out toby lm4883 - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Battery Park City? - 16 years ago
I lived in Battery Park City for a little more than a year and it is a wonderful neighborhood. The parks there are beautiful and there are many apartments overlooking the Hudson River. It is very quiet at night, unlike other areas in the city where you hear constant horn honking and other traffic noise at all hours of the night. In terms of safety, you can't get much safer and it is very eby lm4883 - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: PNC Bank Arts Center - 16 years ago
Hey all, I will need to travel to PNC Bank Arts center from Manhattan this week for a concert. Has anyone actually made the trip? How easy is it? Their website says to take the NJ Transit train to the Matawan station and then they run shuttle buses to the arena, but they stop running at 11:30pm and I am not sure how long the concert will last. Does anyone know how close the train station iby lm4883 - Ask a New Yorker :
cinco de mayo in flushing meadows park - 16 years ago
Hi everyone. Has anyone ever been to the Cinco de Mayo celebration in Flushing Meadows Park? It is scheduled this year for 5/6/2007 (oddly enough, its not actually on the 5th). The website says "Live entertainment, music, game, food and fun for the entire family at this annual favorite." I was just wondering if anyone has gone and if it is worth the trip? If anyone has more informaby lm4883 - Ask a New Yorker :
Viennetta ice cream - 17 years ago
Does anyone know where I can get Viennetta? It is an ice cream treat that is no longer sold in the US. It is under the Unilever brand and is still available in most countries besides the US, so I was wondering if anyone knew of a local european/asian grocery store that imports and sells this product? Thanks so much!by lm4883 - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Broker's fee - 17 years ago
Yes, thats a good plan. It's much, much easier to look for a place when you are here in the city, as opposed to far away. Check out www.sublet.com for some short term options. I have never used it, but have heard it is good. Also, craigslist is great (which i have used).by lm4883 - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Broker's fee - 17 years ago
Short answer: If you see an apartment you like and it doesn't have a broker's fee, go for it. Long answer: A broker's fee is not a determinant in the quality of an apartment, nor will it guarantee anything. There is not necessarily a "catch" to apartments without a broker's fee. Most of the apartments without a broker's fee are in large buildings, are relby lm4883 - Ask a New Yorker :
dentist recommendations needed - 17 years ago
Hi, Does anyone know of any good dentists in Manhattan? Just trying to make the experience as bearable as possible. If they take Metlife Dental that would be even better! Thanks.by lm4883 - Ask a New Yorker :
gyms in forest hills, queens - 17 years ago
Anyone have some insight into what are the best places to work out in Forest Hills? Looking to join a gym or maybe a yoga center. I have seen the NYSC on Austin st and have also heard about Platinum Gym. Just wondering if anyone had some information on which gyms in the area are the best. Thanks!!by lm4883 - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: bridge/tunnel restrictions - 17 years ago
Okay, I have been doing some more searching. I have discovered that the Brooklyn Bridge is cars only and the Queensboro (59th St.) bridge allows no trucks on the upper level. Can anyone recommend a good driving route from Battery Park City in lower Manhattan to Forest Hills, Queens? Thanks!!by lm4883 - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: bridge/tunnel restrictions - 17 years ago
Actually, I was looking more for information on the East River crossings and I didn't see that on the PA-NYNJ site. Anyone have any ideas?by lm4883 - Ask a New Yorker :
bridge/tunnel restrictions - 17 years ago
Hello, I am wondering if anyone knows of a website where I can find a list of the restrictions for trucks on bridges and tunnels. The reason I ask is because I know the Holland Tunnel does not allow trucks and I ran into a problem last year when I tried to drive a UHaul through the tunnel while moving. I think there are also no trucks on the Brooklyn Bridge, is this true? I wanna plan out tby lm4883 - Ask a New Yorker :
queens neighborhood differences - 17 years ago
Hi all, I am planning on moving to Queens from Manhattan and am trying to narrow down exactly what neighborhood would be best for me. I am thinking it will be one of the following: Astoria, Sunnyside, Woodside or Forest Hills. Could someone who lives in one of these neighborhoods or is just knowledgable about them explain to me the main differences between them? Are they all accessible byby lm4883 - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: moving from manhattan to astoria - 17 years ago
thanks so much red. I am planning on visiting the neighborhood next weekend. Walk around and see what neighborhoods interest me and sign up with some rental agencies. and yes 3025!! its ridiculous. i can't bring myself to fork over that much cash. I am ready to have my own place, after living with roommates for four years and i think i will be able to do that with the prices in astoria.by lm4883 - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: First Trip - 17 years ago
In Manhattan, it is important to know that most trains run uptown and downtown (north and south). The exception being the 7 train, L train and Shuttle which run east and west. What attractions are you planning on visiting downtown? I can suggest the best subways lines to take. Also, when you get here you can ask any subway station booth attendant for a map of the subway. These are free. Theby lm4883 - Ask a New Yorker :
moving from manhattan to astoria - 17 years ago
I am considering moving out of Manhattan. I have lived here for a year, and now my landlord is raising the rent 12% which would be $3025 for a 1 bedroom converted to 2. This is out of my budget, so I am considering moving to Astoria. The rents are a lot cheaper but I am wondering where the best places to live in Astoria are? I would like to be close to the subway, as well as close to shoppingby lm4883 - Ask a New Yorker :
statue of liberty/ellis island wait times - 17 years ago
I was thinking about going to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island tomorrow (Saturday). I haven't been in a long time. Has anyone been recently that can give me an estimate as to how crowded it will be? I know the ferry operates on a first-come-first-serve basis. Just trying to estimate how much time I should allow. finding a doctor who takes empire bluecross blueshield - 17 years ago
Hi, I was wondering if anyone knew of a good primary care physician and gynocologist who takes Empire Bluecross Blueshield. I figured I would ask instead of just randomly selecting one. Re: Moving to NYC from Southern California - 18 years ago
Regarding gym memberships, you can get a good deal if you look around. I had a membership at Bally's for $46/month, and recently just joined the brand new Gold's Gym downtown for only $37.99/month. Ridiculously cheap for NYC. If you can, try to look around for deals and promotions that gyms offer throughout the year. Also, the end of the month is the best time to sign up because theby lm4883 - Ask a New Yorker :

Club Sol - Has anyone been?? - 18 years ago
I am thinking about going to Club Sol this Saturday. I was just wondering if anyone had been and how it was. I know it is a relatively new space. The cover is kinda steep (although standard for NY i guess) so I wanted to make sure it was good before I waste money. thanks!!by lm4883 - Ask a New Yorker :
need answer quick: cab to jfk during rush hour, how long?? - 18 years ago
I know this is last minute, but I am taking a flight tommorow outta JFK. I have only flown out of this airport once, and I am wondering how long it will take to get there by cab during rush hour. I will be leaving straight from my office in midtown and my flight departs from JFK at 6:47pm. What time should I leave in order to allow enough time. I know it can be difficult to get a cab around tby lm4883 - Ask a New Yorker :

Apparently the clock is in the financial district. This is taken from a website: "In a scene where Sandler is talking to the kid, they are passing through the Greenwich Village area. In the next shot, they are walking in front of a "clock building" (one side has the numbers 1-12 and 0-59). This building is located on John Street in the financial district, which is over 2 miles awaby lm4883 - Ask a New Yorker :

Gourmet Nuts - 18 years ago

Re: H&M clothing stores? - 18 years ago
There are several of them in the city - a couple in Soho, a couple on 34th Street and the one mentioned earlier near St. Patrick's Cathedral. I like their clothes a lot and they are not expensive. However, their selection varies. Sometimes I will shop and buy a lot, and other times I will find absolutely nothing that I like. So it all depends. But you should definitely check it out!!by lm4883 - Ask a New Yorker :
Hair Salons - 18 years ago
I just moved to the city. I was wondering if anyone can recommend a good hair salon/stylist. I usually get a cut and highlights and pay around $140. So something in that price range would be great. I would love to hear about people's good and bad experiences so I can try to narrow down where to go. Thanks. (Please don't post if you work in a salon.)by lm4883 - Ask a New Yorker :
