Re: Moving up Next Week - Queens Help - 18 years ago
jackson heights ....will take about 30 min to midtown, not bad. Ridgewood...I'm moving there! will take about 25 min to 14th ST/Union Sq. The area around Myrtle Ave and Forest Ave is really nice, I love it. Jamaica is not a nice place. Search this forum for Jamaica and see previous comments. Forest Hills is nice, and won't be too long to get to midtown.by askanewyorker - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: Staying at the Crowne Plaza / Laguardia - 18 years ago
here is a previous posting about staying at hotels by Laguardia.... Staying near LaGuardia airport is a poor choice, as the airport is utterly unserved by subways and is basically a haul from Manhattan. You have to take a bus - either the Q33 or M60 - from a subway station to the airport, and then potentially a shuttle bus from the airport to the hotel, because the hotels aren't actuallyby askanewyorker - Ask a New Yorker :

try B & H: www.bhphotovideo.com note: not open on Saturdays careful of all the little sketchy electronic shops you'll see around, esp around that area near Penn Station.by askanewyorker - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: mets/yanks and giants/jets - 18 years ago
this doesn't exactly answer your question, but you will find it interesting, anyway. It was an article which appeared on this site in April: How do you tell Mets fans from Yankees fans? (And where?) By Bill Millard AS AN OLD mathematicians’ joke goes, there are two kinds of people in the world: those who believe there are two kinds of people in the world, and those who don’t. Re: beach - 18 years ago
Fire Island gets my vote. It is a bit of a hassle to get there, but if you leave early in the morning you can get there and have a full day in the sun, on a quiet nice beach.by askanewyorker - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: NY - 18 years ago
Hi Lola, I don't think we've been asked this question quite like this before. Big Apple Greeter is certainly one way to get around and see the city and outer bouroughs. But one needs to plan ahead for their free greeeter guide. I just recently met someone that does exactly what your asking for specializing in boutiques and such. I'll try to dig up her name. Re: shopping for "ethnic" jewelry - 18 years ago
I don't know the name of the place, but there is a shop just north of union square on broadway, not so far north as the ABC Home store, on the opposite side of the street of the ABC Store (so on the west side of the street), that would have things like this. It's an African store. It's around 17th or 18th St on the west side of broadway.by askanewyorker - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: shops - 19 years ago
if you go down the page a little bit you will see a posting called "a week in NYC"...there are lots of recommendations for shopping there. For you, based on what you said you are looking for, I would recommend that you walk down broadway, starting around 14th St. you will find lots of shops that you will like. Also, for sure go to St. Marks Place (a street in the east village.)by askanewyorker - Ask a New Yorker :
