Re: moving to New York for 6 months or more - 13 years ago
You could probably get a tourist visa if you are not going to work, you have to be able to show that you have enough money to support yourself for the time that you will be there. I don't think you would be able to open a bank account without a social security number and you need a work visa for one of those.by Marea - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: NYC Heat Wave - 13 years ago
I'm always amused when I see you guys talking about it being 103 degrees, etc. That was the normal summer temperature for around 2 months of the summer where I grew up.by Marea - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Sorry for the spam! - 13 years ago
I got one but immediately knew when I saw the title of the email, it was mispelt and grammatically incorrect. Did you intend to join facebook again or is that connected to this spam?by Marea - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Carrie Bradshaw - 13 years ago
The people that live there now may not be the people who originally agreed to have it used in the series and even if they are, they may not have realised the consequences. I'm sure they had no idea that the show would have such a following. Buildings in New York are used all the time in movies and tv shows but that is the only one that appears to attract so many people. I was at an apartby Marea - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: after the wedding.... - 13 years ago
For the dance venue I would recommend The Village Underground, it is on W3rd Street near 6th Ave, under the Fat Black Pussycat. Not sure what day your wedding is on but they have the most amazing band there on Wed, Thurs and Fridays. Check out the website www.thevillageunderground.comby Marea - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: midtown apartment safety - 13 years ago
54th and 9th is a good area with lots of great restaurants and bars. It is an underrated part of New York. I also agree that you should be careful about the booking. How are you paying? Did they want all the money up front?by Marea - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Taxi fares - 13 years ago
You don't need to call a taxi ahead from the airport, there is a taxi rank outside. Only use the yellow taxis, the guys that approach you as you leave the terminal are not legal.by Marea - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Country music bars - 13 years ago
I don't know of any, maybe someone else will know. New York is not known for country music.by Marea - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Beaches in New York - 13 years ago
Unlike Barcelona, you have to travel for a while to get to beaches in New York. The closest to the city would be Coney Island in Brooklyn.by Marea - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Carrie Bradshaw - 13 years ago
The inside of Carrie's apartment was a film set, the outside was filmed on Perry Street and yes people live in the building and they have a chain across the steps because they are sick of people having there photos taken in front.by Marea - Ask a New Yorker :

It seems to me that most sports bars are showing the soccer so you shouldn't have a problem finding somewhere.by Marea - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Outlet Price range - 13 years ago
You can get brand names at normal shops at good prices in NY. Macys, for example, always has good sales. Loehmans, Filene's Basement and Daffys are also good. Outlet malls are Woodbury Common in upstate New York (more than an hour north of the city) and Jersey Gardens at Elizabeth New Jersey.by Marea - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Carrie Bradshaw - 13 years ago
It is 66 Perry Street in the West Village, it is easy to tell which one it is as it has a chain across the steps to stop people from standing on them while having their photos taken.by Marea - Ask a New Yorker :

I think the subway in New York is safer than the Metro in Paris regarding being robbed.by Marea - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: cheap ugg boots? - 14 years ago
The only genuine ugg boots are in Australia or New Zealand, where they came from. Just buy the cheapest you can find in New York.by Marea - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: A good bus tour? - 14 years ago
I agree with Oracle, I have taken the tour a number of times with friends who were visiting and think it is much better to do a whole loop and then go back to the places that appealed the most. Otherwise you are wasting a lot of time waiting for buses.by Marea - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: New York in 24 hours - 14 years ago
The market at Union Square would be good as well.by Marea - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: question about art museum in Manhattan. - 14 years ago
The Met is always worth a visit whether there is a particular exhibit on or not, there is so much there. I have been at least 5 times and I always find something that I have misses on previous visits.by Marea - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Getting Married in New York - 14 years ago
Why are you staying in Staten Island? It is going to be very inconvenient to travel from there to all the places you mention, especially with a young baby.by Marea - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Doorman tipping - 14 years ago
Both times I lived in Manhattan I lived in buildings with 24 hour doorman and both times we had wonderful helpful staff but we only tipped at Xmas.by Marea - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Safe areas of Manhattan - 14 years ago
We have picked up hire cars in New Jersey, just caught the Path train from Manhattan to Journal Square. It can be a bit daunting from there though as well when you're used to driving on the other side. I am also an Aussie. Look for a biggish place out of Manhattan that is on a train line and check out hire car agencies there. We have had good luck with Enterprise. We have hired a car inby Marea - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Wife's baby milk in chef's cheese recipe - 14 years ago
Sorry, I should have said it doesn't taste that good, but it is the best things babies can have. If this woman had so much extra milk she should have been sending it to the local hospitals, that is what was done in Australia when I was having babies, we sent it to the neo-natal wards for the premature bubs.by Marea - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Wife's baby milk in chef's cheese recipe - 14 years ago
I can't imagine what the cheese must taste like, I have tasted breast milk (my own), I had 5 babies and fed them for 1 to 2 years, it's not really that good.by Marea - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: Woodbury Common Outlet Mall - 14 years ago
The amount of money you would spend in fares travelling to and from Secuasus added to your accommodation would be the same as the extra money you would spend staying in Manhattan. It would be totally inconvenient as well. I also don't understand this obsession with outlet shopping, you can get just as good, if not better prices in Manhattan.by Marea - Ask a New Yorker :
