Re: rudeness - 18 years ago
I agree with you Leo. I actually found most New Yorkers polite and extremely friendly, in fact friendlier and more polite than many people in Australia. In the last 12 months, besides New York, I have been in Washington, London, Dublin, Hong Kong, Seoul and Sydney as well as smaller cities and I think it is just a part of city life that the pace of life makes people less patient and may be a litby Marea - Ask a New Yorker :

Just arrived back in Sydney from 3 weeks in Seoul and two days in Hong Kong. The Xmas lights in Seoul are looking fantastic. Had to tell you though that there is a Times Square in Hong Kong. The funny thing is that it is not lit up like the rest of Hong Kong, The area around Times Square is Causeway Bay and all the streets are lit up like Times Square New York.by Marea - Ask a New Yorker :

If you come to Sydney go to Paddington you will find some great chocolate shops mixed with the high fashion and trendy cafes. Sweet William on William Street, just off Oxford is wonderful. Also Valentine chocolates at Kensington, they are more liqueur chocolates and totally sinful.by Marea - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Hershey - 18 years ago
Good idea Beth, we went to Lancaster County last year and it was wonderful, all the covered bridges and quaint villages. If you are interested Felicity, we took the train from Penn Station and hired a car in Lancaster and drove all over, you could include Hershey in the trip. We spent the night in a place called Ephrata in an old inn that was built in the 1700s and it was lovely, like a B&Bby Marea - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: What to do on New Years eve..... - 18 years ago
You will have to arrive at Times Square very very very early on New Years Eve, probably lunch time, so you may not have time to do anything else.by Marea - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Having a baby in a 1-bedroom in Manhattan - 18 years ago
You're right about it sometimes being more efficient to have less space and also less time consuming. We did the same thing going from smaller to large and now discuss selling and going small again but I love the way everyone and all their friends, girlfriends and boyfriends come in and out all the time, have impromptu parties etc and there is always room for everyone, so I don't know iby Marea - Ask a New Yorker :

Good luck to both of you Leo and Red. As I said I don't think there are any hard and fast rules with kids, just do what works. My last two basically slept in the bed with us for the first couple of years, and the second and third used to wake up sometimes and come in as well when they were very small, I must admit it got a bit crowded sometimes when I was pregnant with the 4th and we wouldby Marea - Ask a New Yorker :

There a tons of things near your hotel because it is right in the Times Square area. I don't know of any vegetarian restaurants but I think you will find that most places have something vegetarian on their menu. I can recommend Langans Irish Pub on 47th between 7th and 6th, they have really good food and are especially good for after a show. As a previous poster mentioned Pax is very goodby Marea - Ask a New Yorker :

Congratulations Red and Mrs Red, I'm thrilled for you. Salsa you must have been really lucky with your kids, my first one slept 8 hours a night by 3 weeks and 12 hours by 6 weeks and was fantastic, only woke occasionally when teething and even then when straight back to bed. I used the same techniques as you (with us it was Dr Green) but they don't work with all babies, my second soby Marea - Ask a New Yorker :

I also love Lindt and I'm sure I saw them in New York, I just can't remember where but it could have been at Pier 1. You should also go to the lower part of Macys (the Cellar) they have all sorts of chocolates there including Godiva. Funnily enough they have a counter there with a sign over it that says, The Australian Chocolate Company, that sells beautiful chocolates but it isnby Marea - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: Hershey - 18 years ago
I just realised that you are from Australia too, so to give you an idea, Hersheys don't come near Cadburys or any of our mass produced brands let alone the more specialised ones. You will also find that there is not as much variety in chocolates, chips or cracker biscuits as we have, I had visitors bringing over Arnotts crackers, especially BBQ Shapes. Re: Hershey - 18 years ago
I was pretty unimpressed with Hershey chocolates as well, (we have really good chocolate in Australia) but I did like nuggets (I think that's the name) with nuts and candy in them. If you are limited with time while you are in New York just go to the store in Times Square you would waste a whole day travelling to and from Hershey PAby Marea - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Doorman Christmas gifts - 18 years ago
Because there were 10 we limited it to $50 each and put it in a Xmas card thanking them for all their care (they were all wonderful) and then put that in an envelope.by Marea - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Doorman Christmas gifts - 18 years ago
We used to tip our guys (10 in our building) altogether, we gave it to the guy who was in charge but they all seemed friendly with each other and as we were thanked by each of them we assumed they all got it, but at least individually you are sure.by Marea - Ask a New Yorker :

I'm not sure that the Naked Cowboy is there in December I think he usually heads to warmer climes at that time, but I may be wrong. The Milford Plaza is right in the middle of Times Square but is also known as the Mildew Plaza.by Marea - Ask a New Yorker :

I loved Benisty on W26th between 6th and 7th Aves,(it is on the south side of 26th near the corner of 7th), ask for Michael, it is not cheap, around $135 for a cut but definitely worth every cent.by Marea - Ask a New Yorker :

Thanks, I couldn't remember. Matty, I was in Australia for last New Years Eve but my husband was in New York and he had a great night at The Limerick on 23rd Street, it is near the corner of 6th Ave on the north east side, next to the Masonic Centre.by Marea - Ask a New Yorker :

Leo, I know you need to know something about the schools in an area if you are considering a family but as you haven't had children yet there is the possibility that things can change. I know from my own experience (mother of 5, grandmother of 2) that the standard of schools can change in the matter of a few short years. When my eldest son was starting school we sent him to the local cathoby Marea - Ask a New Yorker :

Matthew it is hard for people who live in New York to comment on hotels, they don't stay in hotels, they live in their own homes. This site relies on people from outside New York to comment on accommodation and obviously no one who has stayed at this hotel has visited this site recently.by Marea - Ask a New Yorker :
