Re: Choice of apartments - 15 years ago
Before you start getting indignant about "tone", I suggest you read As has been written here in the past by others, 99.99% of these short-term rentals are not allowed. Even if these people renting to you own the apartment/condo, they are violating terms of their leases or condo bylaws. Their neighbors would not appreciate strangers in their building 24/7, and the security probleby ieee488 - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Choice of apartments - 15 years ago
Familar with these people how? Do these people make a practice of renting out their apartments? If these people are truly your friends and happen to be out of town and let you have the apartment for a week, that is one thing. If not and if the neighbors get wise and call the cops, you'll be tossed out no questions asked. Suffice to say, that I'd have no qualms calling the copsby ieee488 - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: To JFK from Greyhound Bus stop - 15 years ago
Why are you flying into JFK if you are going to Piscataway????? Fly into Newark. If you insist on flying into JFK... best option to Piscatway is of course a car service; probably about $100+. the absolute cheapest option is subway to WTC. Then take PATH to Newark Penn Station. Then take NJ Transit train from Newark Penn Station to the train station nearest Piscataway (Piscataway itselfby ieee488 - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Bus Terminal on Canal St to JFK Airport - 15 years ago
By the way, there is NOT bus terminal in Chinatown. You are just dropped on the streets. The only bus terminal is Port Authority Bus Terminal at 42nd St and 8th Avenue.by ieee488 - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: Broadway Shows - 15 years ago
There are actually 3 TKTS booths - two in Manhattan and one in Brooklyn. By the way, most of the Broadway shows double the ticket prices between Christmas and New Year's Day, so a 1/2 price ticket will actually be $100+. The good thing is that they now take credit cards. Also, the popular shows such as Wicked, Jersey Boys, South Pacific, Mamma Mia will not be on TKTS.by ieee488 - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: practical for a student driving a car in the city - 15 years ago
I don't know if people still do this. I remember reading about people going over to Europe and buying a BMW or Porche or some sort of expensive card and then shipping it back. But by the time one factors the costs of modifying the car (exhaust emissions regulations, safety, etc) to be acceptable to US standards, it didn't end up being that much of a saving. Wouldn't the reveby ieee488 - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: practical for a student driving a car in the city - 15 years ago
Besides the actual cost of the car, he will have to pay NY state sales tax. For each year he owns the car, he has to pay registration and tags fee. For my Honda in NJ, it is $48. I would imagine it is more in NYC. Then he will have to insure the car which is required by law. The cost for a brand new Hummer is probably $1000+/year. It will probably be more since he is under 21. Then thereby ieee488 - Ask a New Yorker :
