I can tell you that I grew up in the projects, and walked through them at night for many years. I'm still here!by Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :

We'll just need to get started on our own business, so you'll have a place to sleep at least! I think on your next trip you ought to try the place that Karen loves, Jack & Judy's B&B on the UWS.by Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :

Nah, that'd take drive! Besides, my apt. is very quiet, and cheap as well. I must have a Type C personality.by Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Small kid - 19 years ago
While by law kids have to ride in special car seats, quite absurdly, the law doesn't apply to taxis. Worse yet are the pedi-cabs that zip through traffic with tourists (and their children). The law obviously doesn't apply to them either. Personally, I find the subways and buses much safer.by Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :

Nooooooooo... Take the Downtown #6 from Grand Central. Astor Place is the stop after 14th St.by Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: subways=confusing please help - 19 years ago
It is so easy to get downtown, and the directions you printed make it sound like rocket science! If you're near Broadway, get the Downtown 1 or 9 train to the South Ferry stop (last stop). Just make sure you're in one of the first five cars... you'll see signs advising you of that. If you're nearer Grand Central, take the Downtown 4 or 5 and get off at Bowling Green.by Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: subways=confusing please help - 19 years ago
That's about as confusing as the directions I get from mapquest.com! Tell me your beginning destination and I'll get you downtown easier.by Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: best on the west (side!) - 19 years ago
Not EVERYTHING east of 8th Ave. is embarrassing!!! Carmine's, Virgil's BBQ, John's Pizzeria, Osteria Stella, Le Bernardin, Manhattan Ocean Club, Redeye Grill, Trattoria dell'Arte, and about a zillion others are all east of 8th Ave. Here are some goodies on the UWS -- Ocean Grill, Nice Matin, Pasha, Penang, Gray's Papaya, Fairway Cafe, Ouest, Les Routiers, Barney Greenby Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :

Here are some from Zagat's list of restaurants with private rooms. It doesn't tell you the capacity of the rooms though. I'll give you the Zagat food rating and a web site if it's listed. If there's no rating, it means it's too new to have received a rating yet. These are all in Manhattan except for two, which are close enough and fabulous enough to be consideredby Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :

I browsed through Jennifer's photos, and they are great! I'm hoping everyone posts on a share site (I like shutterfly.com) so I can print some of everyone's pictures.by Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :

Shaun, there are agencies that handle "swap" listings. Try googling. And lots of luck to you, your home sounds lovely.by Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Weird Question - 19 years ago
We just call them salad bars. The one across the street from my office, Pranzo, has a cold salad bar, a hot salad bar, plus a raw foods bar that you select and they'll cook it for you. Seems like most lunch places have some kind of salad bar.by Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Subway - 19 years ago
And, yes, we do call the subway "the train." But the commuter railroad lines that run out of Grand Central and Penn Station are also the "trains." I'm sure that adds to the confusion. But Kelly's right, it's not as tough as it seems. And since you'll probably only be using a few major lines for most of your transit, don't make yourself crazy tryingby Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: Can someone PLEASE explain how the streets run?? - 19 years ago
And we use location more often than addresses when giving directions. I wouldn't say "1251 Sixth Ave.," I'd say "50th St. & 6th Ave."by Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: 1 more big sleep!!! - 19 years ago
I just reconfirmed with the River Cafe for Monday at 6:00. I asked them to please arrange for clear weather, let's see how that goes! Safe travels.... Jennifer arrived last night and has gotten a jump on filling the empty suitcases she brought. You've got some catching up to do. Can't wait to see you!!! Yay!by Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :

I've read this book too! (Of course great minds think alike.) It was o.k., but I always knew while I was reading that she was trying to recreate T&A. So, you survived another b-day? Dare I ask if hidden among your many presents was a little airline ticket?by Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: Average grocery spendings ?? - 19 years ago
Many of us order from www.freshdirect.com -- go to their web site to get an idea of how much our food is. I think their prices are average. And yes, on average it's more expensive in Manhattan.by Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :
