Re: Books - 18 years ago
Just a quick hop over for a week, a couple of days up north, seeing the sights of Sunderland with a certain AANY contributor, having a big fun party of area friends, then training down to London to hang with an old pal, see some shows (do you think five shows in four days is too much?). Arriving Edinburgh Nov. 27, departing London Dec. 3. Don't tell me we'll be passing in opposite dby Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :

Check with your neighbors. Typically you make one gift (just for Christmas) that's divvied up among the staff.by Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :

I can't believe they'll want to do something other than "party" with us. I'll have you know I'm quite the party animal... well, until around 10:15, when it's time for a nap.by Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: mayoral race - 18 years ago
My views have certainly changed over the years. I voted against the prop because the only thing I'll see in my lifetime is Second Avenue under construction. It took four years to repair ONE stairway at 86th St. How long do you think this 20-year project will take? I realize the infrastructure needs funds for maintenance and expansion. I think they ought to adjust their priorities andby Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :

Problem solved. Sort of. Here's the response I got from the CT State Library: Residents of Connecticut are generally called "Connecticuters," although there are other names that have been used. You can find more information about our nicknames at our web site which you can access at I hope this will be helpful. Thank you for writing to the State Library. Re: tipping cabbies - 18 years ago
Just step to the curb and raise your arm. You don't have to whistle. You can also scream "TAAAAAAAAAXI!" Figure a tip of 15-20%. You can't call for a taxi. There are car services you can hire, but they're expensive. Dial7 and Carmel are popular. 212-777-7777 or 212-666-6666.by Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :

I once saw Lauren Bacall waiting on line at Zabar's. The other customers offered to let her go ahead, and she said no, she'd just as soon wait her turn. Classy woman! I've seen her a few times over the years, and she still looks fabulous.by Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Bakery in Red's Astoria - 18 years ago
I've just finished breakfast, but I'm suddenly hungry. Red, are you going to be around over the holidays? Karen, Helen and David will be here to celebrate the new year, and I think it'd be pretty special to have you and Mrs. Red lead a progressive eating party through Queens. Hopefully the KMs would be around. It'd make Salsa so j-e-a-l-o-u-s that she'd hop the next fby Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :

Yes, New England does include Connecticut. What I'd like to know is what you call someone from the state itself, not the region. You know -- like you're a Coloradan (?), I'm a New Yorker, there are Californians, Texans, Iowans....by Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :

Hi there... I'm sure Ange's already told you, but be sure to get your license early, as it's literally a 24-hour wait. So if you get it late in the day, you can't get married until exactly the same time next day. I had the pleasure of witnessing Ange & 22Seconds' wedding (as well as Diva and Ryan's), and it was a mad dash to Borough Hall!!! There are lots ofby Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :

The Milford Plaza doesn't get the best reviews. But if you've gotten a good price, I wouldn't worry about it. December is the busiest and most expensive time to come to New York, and hotel costs are outrageous. The Milford Plaza is safe and very convenient. So just enjoy being in New York. First, I'll tell you that while Thalia is nice, I usually end up there if I can't get a reservation at my "first choice" theater district restaurants, namely, Orso, Vice Versa, Joseph Citarella, Lattanzi, Beacon, Trattoria del'Arte, and others. I'd be hard pressed to pick just one place. I love Tocqueville, Veritas, Town. They're not as expensive as Per Seby Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :

Take a look at Norma's menu: Pretty fabulous,in Le Parker Meridien Hotel. Very popular, go early to avoid the long wait. I also like EJ's Luncheonette (3 locations). Sarabeth's is also very popular (4 locations). www.sarabeth.comby Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :
