Re: Neighborhood description - 19 years ago
The neighborhood is Carnegie Hill, a wealthy enclave on the UES just next to Spanish Harlem. It encompasses the area between 5th, Madison & Park Avenues and between 86th and 96th Sts. Museums nearby are El Museo del Bario, Museum of the City of New York, Cooper-Hewitt, Guggenheim and others (plus the Met is just a few blocks away). Some wonderful but expensive shops and nice restaurants.by Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: good hotel - 19 years ago
Proximity to Penn Station is fine if you've got to be near the railroad station or have business at Madison Square Garden. Other than that, it's a low-end commercial district, with dirty disgusting streets that are deserted at night and nothing but fast-food restaurants. So, yes, it's central, but just a few blocks up at Times Square is even nicer.by Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: Which restaurant would you choose? - 19 years ago
Angus McIndoe is a decent enough theater district place, but the menu is on the disappointing side. I love Carmine's, but not with fewer than four hungry adults. Esca is very good Italian seafood. I haven't been to the others.by Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: Cable TV providers - 19 years ago
I don't think you've got a choice, I'm pretty sure it depends on what company has wired your building. I'm only 90% sure of this though! Check with Time Warner Cable's web site for more info.by Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :

The real coffee shop that inspired Tom's was the Westway Diner, on 9th Ave. between 43rd-44th Sts. Jerry Seinfeld used to hang out there.by Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: broadway shows - 19 years ago
It's a tough call to recommend a show to a stranger. Nost men I know would rather be at a baseball game than a theater, particularly the "girlie" musicals like "Phantom" and "Little Women." The three shows I think anyone would have a great time at are "Hairspray," "Avenue Q," and "Mamma Mia." I also loved "Movin' Out.&qby Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: 4 different people - 19 years ago
You'll feel quite safe on your own, no worries there. As for what you can all do... I think you should have a family meeting and decide what things you're all interested in, then plot out your "must see" attractions on a map. That way you can focus on one area at a time. The Gray Line bus tours are very popular, probably a good thing to do when you first arrive to get anby Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :

Whew! What a nail-biter of a story. I'm so glad you managed to save the poor cow, hope she found her way home. I never would have imagined that life in New York could be downright peaceful compared to Oklahoma. You've got to get here and relax a bit. The Tenement Museum tour is a wonderful experience. I think it takes an hour or so. If you have time, the area is interesting to eby Oracle - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: trash - 19 years ago
My pet peeve is people who go out of their way to "place" their trash -- I see empty bottles, cups, etc. on top of high ledges, like in the subway, or on top of door jambs and store awnings. It's obvious the litterer went to special effort to put it there. Oh, another "favorite" is when people squish their garbage between the bus seat and the side of the bus.
