Re: Bus ride , how long? - 17 years ago
To get there quicker, walk to the Broadway and 72 Street subway station and take the uptown 2 or 3 train to the 116 Street station (3 stops). It will take less than 10 minutes and you will be at 116 Street and Seventh Avenue.by nyc10025 - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: Is there a part of Manhattan that isn't Manhattan? - 17 years ago
This is the opposite of what you asked but there is a part of the mainland that is north of the Harlem river and not part of the island that is part of the borough of Manhattan.by nyc10025 - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: Meeting people in the city - 17 years ago
Go to the ballet and museums. As you are probably aware there are many of both. Just talk to people, particularly unattached men, at the breaks or around you at the ballet and in the various parts of the museums. You will start off with at least one interest in common.by nyc10025 - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: O'Neals Lincoln Center - 17 years ago
I like O'Neil's. We usually go there after a performance at Lincoln Center. As already stated, it's casual, but "white tablecloth" restaurant with decent food and the atmosphere is festive.by nyc10025 - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Anyone buy a co-op recently? - 17 years ago
I'm on the Board of a Manhattan coop. Anyone buying a coop should have the apartment and the building itself looked at by a house inspector. They will give you a report which will tell you the problems and then you can decide whether to go through with the deal and negotiate a lower price for major problems. A Board will not approve a renovation until you submit plans but they can not withhoby nyc10025 - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: walking - 17 years ago
Since you are not going to rushing around and want to see things, I would give yourself about one and one-half minutes to walk north/south streets or about 30 minutes for 20 blocks which is about a mile. East/west avenue blocks take about 4 minutes each to walk.by nyc10025 - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: A real map?! - 17 years ago
I believe that the best map of Manhattan, by far, is Manhattan Block by Block by John Tauranac. I live in Manhattan and I use it all the time. See link:by nyc10025 - Ask a New Yorker :

First, your English is fine. For new books, I would recommend you go to Barnes and Noble. The closest one to your hotel is 600 Fifth Avenue at 49 Street. See link:by nyc10025 - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: hotels and cab fairs in West Side - 17 years ago
Look at the Newton hotel which is a 5 minute subway or cab ride from 75 Street and Broadway. Cab fare would be less than $5. The Newton Hotel is on the Upper West Side on Broadway and 95th Street. It gets good reviews, especially for value. It is in a safe residential neighborhood with close by shops and good moderately priced restaurants. Re: safety walking and taking subway at night - 18 years ago
New York City is the safest large city in the US. It is very safe to walk around the theater district and midtown Manhattan well past 11 PM. There will be many people on the street. The subway is also safe. You may want to take a taxi instead of the subway after midnight although it is still safe but with less riders. Re: Stuyvesant Town - 18 years ago
This development was built in 1947 for middle class families of GIs returning from the Second World War. Recently, as apartments become vacant, they have been modernizing the interiors--new bathrooms, kitchens, etc, and of course substantially raising the rent (though they are still somewhat below the going rate).. I have only been in the pre-modernized apartments. They are fairly large for NYC aby nyc10025 - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Classic drink location and any decent UWS pubs? - 18 years ago
The Algonquin Hotel lobby lounge is classic. The Plaza is closed for renovations. Another restaurant/bar near your hotel (although not really a local place) is the Cafe des Artistes, 1 W 67 Street near Central Park West As far as local bars go, there are many on Columbus and Amsterdam in the 70s and 80s. Just take a walk and see what looks good to you.by nyc10025 - Ask a New Yorker :
