I heard that the sales tax in NYC has been lowered effective today, but I can't find what the new rate is. anyone know?

I just heard that as of September, the city tax will be eliminated on certain items, so tax on clothing under $110 will be 4% less than it is now, resulting in about a 4.5% sales tax on those items. that's good news.

I thought I had read somewhere that there is no sales tax for clothing and shoes under $110? I am very unfamiliar with your tax system (everything in Aust is quoted with tax included), so maybe I have this wrong?

There used to be no tax on clothing under $110, but that exception was eliminated, except for occasional and unpredictable "tax holiday" weekends.

Beginning Sept. 1, 2005 the sales tax on any single item of clothing in NYC costing $110 or less will be 4.375%. The sales tax on other items and clothing costing more than $110 will be 8.375%

Dates: August 30-September 5

Items covered: Clothing and footwear, as well as items that are used to make or repair clothing, that cost under $110 per item are exempt from state and certain local taxes.
