We support NYPD and say a big no when it comes a federal monitor of our police.

Our endorsement follows Police Commissioner Ray Kelly’s justified and stinging rebuke to the federal government’s secret phone and Internet monitoring campaign when he suggested leaker Edward Snowden was right about privacy “abuse.”

“I don’t think it ever should have been made secret,” Kelly said, breaking ranks with US law-enforcement officials.

Kelly’s blast comes days after the Obama administration and Attorney General Eric Holder outraged New York officials and us here at Ask a new Yorker.com by endorsing a federal monitor for the NYPD. We say leave them alone to do the fine job they do!

The NYPD have successfully kept us safe since 9/11 and have the greatest abilities in the world to combat terrorism.

If anyone knows how to combat terrorism it is NYPD and Commissioner Kelly rejecting Holder’s claim that disclosure of the monitoring campaign seriously damaged efforts to fight terrorism must be taken seriously. Commissioner Kelly and NYPD have proven time after time how to combat terrorism and we should listen.

Thank you Commissioner and NYPD for keeping us safe! DC leave NYPD alone to do what they do best!
