Re: The Strong Buzz New York food blog - 15 years ago
I really liked this story, it touched on my hatred of lawyers and my love of good food, and how one's desires can triumph over the monotony of law firms. Hooray New York!by Blayze - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Getting to JFK from NJ early in the morning - 15 years ago
I've ridden NJ Transit at those awful early morning hours. Although it's fairly creepy and a long boring ride, it is safe. Most central New Jersey trains should get you to New York around 5am. Penn Station on the other hand is alive and awake with homeless people begging for change. Avoid them and head to the LIRR trains, which should get you to Jamaica station in about a half hour.by Blayze - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Where do the rich people live in NYC? Upper West or Upper East? - 15 years ago
New Jersey is an awful place to live, believe me. I know. The taxes are ridiculous. It's also home to three bad urban centers, Newark, Camden, and Trenton. The super rich (ie rappers and celebrities) move to the very upper tip of New Jersey where they own their own mountains and forest reserves alongside their massive McMansions. The other rich folks live along the Hudson in equally expensivby Blayze - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: First time visitor to NY - 15 years ago
Celebrities are a mixed bag, at least for me. My friends say they've seen Angelina Jolie to Henry Kissenger in Greenwich Village and Tribeca although I've never spotted anyone there. I've seen Dennis Leary outside Rockefellar Center and shaken hands with Bill Clinton in a Broadway theatre. So, a real luck of the draw for anyone. The weather is lovely, best time of the year. Re: how to get from newark to midtown... - 15 years ago
The 15 dollars essentially covers the cost of the airtrain (a monorail that takes you from the airport to the NJTransit station) and the cost of the train itself. It is somewhat costly I agree but it's much cheaper in comparison to a cab. Here are the times for a few departing NJTransit trains (around 6pm as you said) heading from the airport station to New York Penn Station and the amounby Blayze - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Christmas dinners options - 15 years ago
I hear Rolf's has gone drastically downhill in terms of quality food over the past few years. Search the Greenwich Village area for fairly pricey restuarants but with a good diverse range of options, Northern Manhattan for Latin cuisine, and Arthur Ave in the Bronx if you want Italian food. And well, the list goes on.by Blayze - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: McCain vs Obama 30 days to go - 15 years ago
I was at the Obama Rally at Washington Square last year. It's when I first believed in America again. And I've been in the same room as John McCain twice this year. (one room being the Conan O'Brien studio) Funny isn't it?by Blayze - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: Romantic New York - 15 years ago
Brooklyn Heights Promenade if you want a nice peaceful stroll along the waterfront, provides stunning views of lower Manhattan's finanacial district, the Brooklyn Bridge, and all the other fun stuff out in the harbor like the Statue of Liberty. Plus fantastic ice cream is nearby at the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory, ie the little white Light House, along with a few other quaint eateries. Takby Blayze - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Citi Field - 15 years ago
I love the 7 Train, one of the most reliable and trusted lines in the subway. Far better than the woefully slow B and D trains to Yankee Stadium. For a mere 4 dollars, you can get from Grand Central Terminal to Shea/Willets Point (Well, citifield now) and back in no time. That's right, 2 dollars each way if you're cheap as heck like me. A taxi on the other hand, would be an expensive deby Blayze - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Special day - 15 years ago
Have a nice stroll over the Brooklyn or Williamsburg Bridge, both are free and provide lovely views of the city. There's a great ice cream shop at the end of the Brooklyn Bridge, and Williamsburg has some nice mom and pop places to check out too, but watch out for hipsters. The Cloisters is a hidden gem in Washington Heights, filled with all kinds of beautiful Medieval artwork, and a cozyby Blayze - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Rockefeller Christmas Tree - 15 years ago
I was hanging around one of the side streets of Rockfellar Center in early January, and it was quite amusing watching all the angels, garland, and other various decorations that surround the plaza get carted away by little pickup trucks.by Blayze - Ask a New Yorker :

It'll cost you 15 dollars each if you want to take the NJ Transit train directly from Newark Air to midtown Manhattan.by Blayze - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Is Harlem safe? - 15 years ago
There's a lyric from the new musical "In the Heights" where the main character Usnavi is talking about his neighborhood, and jokingly says "I've never been north of 96th street" Obviously the belief that Manhattan ends on 96th is alive and well.by Blayze - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Merrill Lynch - 15 years ago
It's scary. Although I don't pity the moguls on top, the poor work-a-day employees deserved better. So be it I guess. Great Depression 2 is on the way.by Blayze - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Midtown West - safe for single female? - 15 years ago
Yes it is safe. Everything in midtown is a big tourist oriented playground, thus the only scary thing there.. is watching another corporate logo go up, ruining your window view.by Blayze - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Central Park Safety - 15 years ago
This is taken from Central Park.com's website "Despite having a population of more than 8 million people, New York City consistently ranks in the top ten safest large cities (cities with more than 500,000 people) in the United States. Violent crimes in New York City have dropped by over two thirds in the last decade and the FBI reports that murder rates in 2000 were the lowest sinceby Blayze - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Mamma Mia Musical in NY - 15 years ago
The Winter Garden theatre which houses Mama Mia is located between 50th and 51st street. Their box office sells tickets from Monday to Saturday: 10am - 8pm and on Sunday: Noon - 6pm or you could try tkts at the Marriot Marquis Hotel or the South Street Seaport tkts which is far less crowded. Those however are day-of tickets and must be seen on the day you purchased the ticket.by Blayze - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: weather in october - 15 years ago
It's quite nice. It can be brisk so bring a jacket or sweater but it's really my favorite season to be in New York. Very refreshing. Not too hot, and not god awfully cold.by Blayze - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Hollister stores - 15 years ago
All major subway terminals end in the Bronx or Queens, of which there are no nearby Hollister (or horrible A&F) stores. If you must, hop the ferry (it's free!) and head to Staten Island. This should help locate it.by Blayze - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: times sq new years eve - 15 years ago
You've never seen the ball drop? That's quite odd. Well, anyway it's basically a giant crystal-laden electric ball that's strung from the top of the old Times Building in Midtown. It descends as midnight approaches to signal the New Year. This video does a better job at explaining it. And yes it's safe to walk the park at night.by Blayze - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Green New York - 15 years ago
I don't know. They knocked down the historic Hewitt Building (built in 1912 and named after former New York mayor, Abraham Hewitt) to construct what looks like an ugly broken air conditioner. I guess it's great to know it'll be 'green' but I think this is just Cooper Union's feeble attempt to keep up with the Jones, aka big old bad NYU, the original Brownstone Killerby Blayze - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: times sq new years eve - 15 years ago
Yes it is. There's no nearby bathrooms either. Skip the square and head to Central Park for a less crowded affair.by Blayze - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: what is hells kitchen? - 15 years ago
Hell's Kitchen is the western part of Midtown. It is also known as Clinton, but that's more of a 'real estate' term for it. It is a mix of apartment buildings, shops, and restaurants. It's past is linked to the Irish gangs which once roamed it's streets.by Blayze - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Broadway show tickets - 15 years ago
You still got some chances left. The first thing I would do is call their box office and see if any tickets are available. (212) 869-0550 You might be able to nab a few seats. Otherwise, your options include, Standing Room Tickets: You may purchase these on the day of the performance, but like the name inquires, you're going to have to stand during the whole performance.
