Re: Rooftop - 14 years ago
the south street seaport is very touristy, and not very interesting in my opinion. if you happen to be downtown (ground zero area) it's just a short walk over, so you could just pop over there for a few minutes to take a look, but it's nothing special. there are lots of rooftop bars/restaurants. One on Lexington ave in midtown is called Rare View, see I think the rooftop is a barby Kelly - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Midtown Diners - 14 years ago
I found this place yesterday: Westway Diner, 9th ave between 44th and 45th St. apparently this is the diner where, long ago, Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David sat down and had their initial discussion about making the Seinfeld Show.by Kelly - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: Biggest/best cinema in NYC - 14 years ago
I like the angelika at broadway and houston, or the sunshine theater on houston and forsyth, for good sort of unusual movies that wouldn't necessarily be in the big theaters. Otherwise, I like the union square movie theater on broadway just south of union sq.by Kelly - Ask a New Yorker :

I've been to Devachan, and thought it was awesome (although expensive). I felt like a movie star when I left there, my hair looked terrific.by Kelly - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: non-touristy things to show to a first time visitor? - 14 years ago
I think walking tours (such as in the link above) are a good idea. There are a lot of choices in addition to these. take her to the galleries in Chelsea, another good idea for a saturday. sushi samba is a fun restaurant for sushi...by Kelly - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Chelsea Market - 14 years ago
oh, and if it's nice out, go along the water (way west) and just walk along by chelsea piers and south. It's a nice walk. You can go all the way down to battery park. Usually lots going on if it's nice out.by Kelly - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Chelsea Market - 14 years ago
I'd say that the shopping in the meatpacking district is going to be pretty expensive....boutiques like Stella McCartney etc. Chelsea market is really mainly food. if you will spend a half day in chelsea, go for the art galleries (not on sunday!). Lots of interesting places to see, even if you are typically not into art. The galleries are way west, 10th and 11th Ave sort of between 21sby Kelly - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Chelsea Market - 14 years ago
the village is south of the meatpacking district. they sort of border one another. The chelsea market is a building with a lot of (good) food shops in it, just north of meatpacking.by Kelly - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: driving license less than a year - 14 years ago
no, nothing like that here. I remember when I lived in Germany I had to learn to drive a stick-shift car there (manual transmission) and I had to drive around with a big "A" sign to show I was a beginner.by Kelly - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: driving license less than a year - 14 years ago
I just found this information at Tourists may drive in the US for up to a year with a foreign driving licence, provided the issuing country is party to the UN Convention on Road Traffic (Geneva, 1949) and the Convention on the Regulation of Inter-American Automotive Traffic (Washington, 1943); most countries are signatories. I live in Sunnyside and I like my neighborhood...it is very easy and quick to get into manhattan and it's safe, has restaurants and shops and the like, and all around I find it a good place to live.by Kelly - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: I'd like to get to Myrtle Beach,SC from Newark Airport in New York - 14 years ago
Have you ever been to Myrtle Beach? I went there a couple years ago on a family vacation and I would NEVER return. They call it the "redneck riviera" for good reason. I didn't like it there at all and cannot figure out why this is such a destination for vacations (unless all you want to do is golf). The beach/sand/water isn't very nice and the whole area is pretty tacky, iby Kelly - Ask a New Yorker :

"Groupon" - 15 years ago
There's this new thing called "groupon", you can sign up for the daily email. Each day you get an email with some kind of offer, for instance, a $25 gift certificate to Randall's Island and you pay $10 for it, or $10 for a $30 gift certificate to a restaurant, etc. Each offer needs a set number of people who want to buy it. If enough people buy it, everyone who said theby Kelly - Ask a New Yorker :

Worst Restaurants in New York City - 15 years ago
Sorry to be so negative, guys, but maybe this will be a useful discussion to some people! If you have your own "worst", go ahead and add it and maybe we can save some people from a bad night! But, I really think I found the worst restaurant in New York last night. It was absolutely horrible in every way....atmosphere, service, and food. Disgusting. Re: Swine Flu Virus - any danger for locals and tourists? - 15 years ago
I'm just watching the today show and joe biden just said that people shouldn't ride the subway if they can help it! not a good thing to say. last night on the news a doctor was on saying to go ahead and ride subways and busses, hold the handrails, and don't worry, just try to use hand sanitizer.by Kelly - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Memorial day weekend - 15 years ago
I don't think you necessarily need to go to any memorial day ceremony....most people just try to hang out in the parks or somewhere outside having a barbeque or something like that. I've never in my life been to a memorial day ceremony (am I a bad citizen?). But, check this out if you do want to do something specifically related to memorial day, I guess there is even a parade:by Kelly - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: A lot of general questions. - 15 years ago
when you are asking about safety of a place, which place are you talking about? Safety varies by area. about the dog, I don't have one but would love to. I'm afraid that it might be too much to have to take it out all the time, especially if I'm gone all day. I also would not feel good about it not having a "back yard" to play in and being too confined in the apartmby Kelly - Ask a New Yorker :
