Re: When does stores open when its day-after christmas sales? - 16 years ago
the stores usually open really early on Dec. 26, and you can expect lots of good sales and lots of people out shopping.by Kelly - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: How do i get to Fifth Ave? - 16 years ago
from times square, just walk east over to fifth ave and start walking north (up the numbered streets). the stores you are interested in start at about 47th St.to get to china town from times square, take the N/R/W train to Canal St and you will be in the middle of it.by Kelly - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Cabs & Mexicans ... ? - 16 years ago
a cab from LGA to Chelsea would cost about $30-$35, I'd say. Only once in my nine years living here in New York have I felt that my cab driver took me for a ride around to get a higher fare. I don't think you'll have a problem with this.by Kelly - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: angel food cake - 16 years ago
a really good thing to do with angel food cake is crush up heath bars and mix it with cool-whip, and spread on top like frosting.by Kelly - Ask a New Yorker :
new taxi fare website - 16 years ago
I just heard about this new site, I thought it might be helpful to some people here! tells you approximate taxi fares from one point to another in NYC. I tried it for LaGuardia to my apartment, and it was pretty close to what I normally pay. It's on the links page of this site now, too.by Kelly - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: Gray Line or NY Party Shuttle? - 16 years ago
both lombardi's and grimaldi's are great for pizza, you can't go wrong with either one. Carmine's is a great choice for italian food. I'd go with the gray line tour. the people from the party shuttle used to come to this site and constantly post messages about their service, and it was really annoying, so I may be a bit biased against them. But anyway, I'd goby Kelly - Ask a New Yorker :

hi salsa, hate to be a bummer, but I really don't recommend rolf's for german food. I don't think the food is that good there, honestly. I liked it the first time I went, but never liked the food any time after that first time. There's better german food, but rolf's does have a pretty festive decor and it's sort of worth seeing. if you are ever, at lunch timeby Kelly - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Hotel Astor on the Park - 16 years ago
A cab from the upper end of the park all the way to the village is going to get expensive. Why not just take the subway, which is perfectly safe? you could take the A,C,B,D, 1,2,or 3 and be in the village (christopher st or W. 4th St)quicker than if you took a cab, probably. The best time to avoid the subway? at 3:00 am if you are really intoxicated. Most any time you will be safe if you jusby Kelly - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Long Island City - How was La Quinta? - 16 years ago
Red is right on with the taxi estimate. As I said, I live in the area, just a few blocks closer to LGA, and my taxi is usually about $18. Restaurant recommendation: Yetzi (japanese and nepalese) on queens blvd, same side of queens blvd as the hotel, at 44th St.by Kelly - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: Inexpensive rent - 16 years ago
well, I like sunnyside, but I don't know if I'd call it exactly "cool". Although, I've lived here for a little over a year and it's definately cool-er than it was when I first got here. I bought my apartment, so I can't give you my experience finding an apartment to rent. Have you tried craigslist.com?by Kelly - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: A Place To Be in NYC - 16 years ago
Williamsburg/Greenpoint in Brooklyn would be convenient to get to NYU...you'd just go up to union square and get the L train over. It's a little pricey over there these days, but I think you could find something in your budget.by Kelly - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Inexpensive rent - 16 years ago
Red mentioned sunnyside...I live there and I like the neighborhood. It is convenient to get to manhattan, there are plenty of restaurants and shops, etc. and as he says, it is affordable.by Kelly - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: resturants - 17 years ago
this is a really hard question to answer, because there are soooo many restaurants in midtown, and I have no idea what your idea of "affordable" is. What kind of place are you looking for? What kind of food? What price range? Have a look at this page for a start: Is there a particular area of midtown you are looking in? West or East?by Kelly - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Long Island City - How was La Quinta? - 17 years ago
well, I live down the street from this hotel, up at queens blvd and 46th st, so I can tell you that the neighborhood is fine and this is convenient to the subway and getting into the city, but I haven't stayed at the hotel.by Kelly - Ask a New Yorker :

Best Western President Hotel, Midtown, 234 W. 48th St., Radisson Lexington Hotel, Midtown East, 511 Lexington Ave. La Quinta Manhattan, 17 W. 32nd St, Midtown. www.applecorehotels.com/la-quinta-manhattan/ I did not check the prices, but I bet any of these would be less expensive than the marriott marquis.by Kelly - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Best restaurants on a budget - 17 years ago
I just posted this in a sushi thread, thought I'd put it here too. yesterday I heard about a place called Yuka, at 1557 Second Ave between 80th and 81st St. They apparently have an all-you-can-eat deal for $20, and I heard (from a Japanese person, incidentally) that it is really really good, fresh fish. I'm just getting into sushi myself, and I will definately give this place a try.by Kelly - Ask a New Yorker :

I saw that guy on the today show, too, Oracle. It was nice to see his different point of view. At first I thought everyone was really blowing this out of proportion. I'm still a little torn about it...why is it OK for everyone else to say these things but not for him?? But then I thought, what if I would say something like this in my workplace? I'd be fired. Re: Hairdresser near Radio city apartments - 17 years ago
Filles Et Garcons 50 W 55th St New York, NY 10019 (212) 586-6585 I used to get my hair cut here, not bad. or, there is a place on 53rd St, between madison and park, right near the corner of madison, on the north side of the street. I've been there too. I am racking my brain trying to think of the name of the place. they take walk ins. It is right by the subway entrance there.by Kelly - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Roller blading in Central Park - 17 years ago
I found some info which may help you: In-Line Skaters can really go wild at The Bandshell, located mid-park at 70th Street, or West Drive at 67th Street, where the NYRSA has set up a slalom course. In summertime, Wollman Rink and Lasker Rink are also accomodating to roller blade fans. this says that you can rent roller blades or skates for $15 per day, but a $100 deposit is required. yby Kelly - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: Day trips out of NY? - 17 years ago
both rhode island and (especially) niagara falls are quite far away, I would not suggest them for a day trip. Philadelphia is an idea, though. It takes about 90 min to get there on the amtrak train from Penn station, and the ticket costs about $100 round trip. the train drops you right downtown Philadelphia.by Kelly - Ask a New Yorker :
