Re: Best place to buy digital cameras in Manhattan - 18 years ago
Well maybe miserable is not the best word. Went to one counter waiting to be served whilst one member of staff just blanked us completely. He eventually spoke to us. The cashier had no manners - no hello, no please, no Thank You. However one member of staff was very helpful when looking for a case for our new camera - he was very good. It was an excellent store (HUGE!) and prices were competiby mrfaize - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Best place to buy digital cameras in Manhattan - 18 years ago
I recently went to New York and found the prices on the camera I was interested in (Sony DSC P200) was MORE EXPENSIVE in New York than at online retailers here in the UK. I have just checked using todays exchange rates - after tax in NY it is cheaper here in the UK www.pixmania.co.uk (2 year guarantee and no customs to negoiate on the return!!) I bought before I went. However I did buyby mrfaize - Ask a New Yorker :

Marea - you must be joking surely - underwhelmed is an understatement!! Can anyone else confirm "THIS IS IT!" If so you should really see Hamley's on Regents Street London, UK. It must be five or six times bigger than FAO.by mrfaize - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Various Questions - 18 years ago
OK guys point taken :-) It just looked to the uninitiated that they might be taken in during the cooler months. What about FAO Schwarz ? Did we miss the BIG store (no pun intended).by mrfaize - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Various Questions - 18 years ago
Thanks for that. The subway information is a bit scary - one line every 5-7 years!! One thing the NY Subway has that London doesn't is AirCon on the trains. The NY stations can be unbearable (rush hour must be bad) but the London Tube (subway) doesn't AirCon either and they suggest drinking plenty of water and if you feel ill get off the train so it doesn't cause delays!! Various Questions - 18 years ago
Following a recent visit to NY a few things got me thinking about a few bizzare questions: The FAO store - is this being renovatated as it didn't seem that big to me but there was a lot of building work around. All we saw was the 'cuddly animal' and another floor of toys. The guys were there with the large floor piano though. Did we miss it elsewhere? NYFD - anyone know whatby mrfaize - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: Shopping - 18 years ago
Err - excuse my ignorance (I'm from overseas - UK) but why is there no sales tax? I know you can ship out of state to save tax but I don't understand this. Thanks Faizeby mrfaize - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: NY Visit Labor Day weekend - 18 years ago
Thanks guys for the replies. UK unlike Europe IS open most of the time. Shops are open 7 days a week in towns and cities. Supermarkets are open 24 hours in many places. There were even complaints why our largest supermarket chain was not open on Christmas day in some areas!! Schedule so far Arrive Thu pm Wander around Central Park to stretch legs after long flight Fri Midtown, Chelsea ESB uby mrfaize - Ask a New Yorker :

Where can I buy Timberland shoes at a good price? I will not be going out to Woodbury Common. Is Century 21 a good place for discounts or is it hype? Thinking of a Saturday but have read it is mad there on Saturday. Thanks, Faizeby mrfaize - Ask a New Yorker :
NY Visit Labor Day weekend - 18 years ago
I am visiting NY for the first time from 1st through 6th September. I see that Labor Day is the 5th Sept but I think the parade is the 10th. A few questions please: 1. What will be open on this day (shops, restaurants, museums etc.)? 2. Does the subway run a holiday service? 3. Will the Staten Island ferry run a normal or holiday service? 4. Will NY be busier (restaurants) than normal onby mrfaize - Ask a New Yorker :
