Regarding attire the theater experience is very differnt from back in the day when poeple really dressed with a sense of purpose. Now its hit or miss. You will see a wide closet spectrum. Smart casual is a good rule of thumb.

The other night went to a show and male friends (also tourists) turned up in open sandals. To a night show where we paid $100 for the "discount" tickets.
I was a bit put off.
Its a bit like going to an expensive restaurant and watching your friends shovel it down at double speed like pigs in a trough.
The thing that makes Broadway a spectacular is if you treat it as such. Its theatre so do some theatre and you may just get the moneys worth
