Hi there! I am a 26 year old female and I am moving to Manhattan in the next couple of months. I have been doing a ton of research to try to figure out where I want to live in the city. I have a large dog, so I need somewhere close to a park and also safe. I will be taking a job in sales with my territory covering all of Manhattan and the Bronx. I want to be somewhat centrally located, but also in a fun, hip, and happening area. I love the nightlife, great restuarants, and cool people in the East Village, but is that a good location? I am really looking for advice from peeps in the same demographic. Thanks.

what will your budget be for rent?
That is an important question.
The east village is going to be quite expensive, but as you say, a fun place to live.
Have you considered at all living in Brooklyn or Queens? Is that an option? Even if your sales territory will be the Bronx and Manhattan (that's a huge territory, I wonder what kind of sales job it is! I have only three zip codes to cover in manhattan) I still think you could live in another borough and it would not be a big deal.
Give me a little more of an idea of what you are looking for and what you can afford, and I will try to answer more completely.

Hi. I definitely want to live IN the city. I am moving for the location not necessarily the job. My rent budget is about $2000, but I could fork over a tad more if it is a great place. So you are also in sales...what kind? I am taking a medical device sales position, so all of the major hospitals and surgicenters. I have done quite a bit of research and I do want to continue my "no roommate" situation. I would like a true one bedroom, but a large alcove would be ok too. Let me know what you think.

Brooklyn and Queens are definitely part of THE city! In fact, if you're in the downtown areas of those boroughs, you're closer to the east side hospitals than you would be from the UWS and areas north.

Let me be clear...MANHATTAN!!! NO Queens, Brooklyn, Staten Island, or Bronx, I speciffically want to live in Manhattan. My territory includes all of Manhattan, just Manhattan, so if anyone has advice on that specific part of THE actual city that would be helpful. Thanks.

If you'll be in the Bronx a lot you might consider the upper upper west side or possibly even further north into Manhattan, depending on your budget. By upper upper west side I mean above 96th St from Central Park West to Riverside Drive., up to about 125th street. This is a very established neighborhood with lots of university students (Columbia is on Broadway at 116th St. and has a campus going several blocks in every direction from there). WHile it has some restaurants and clubs, it is not really known for its night life. HOwever, if you live in the East Village you may be facing some long subway rides into the Bronx.

The more central part of the Upper West side - from the 60s to the 90s - is one of Manhattan's most prestigious areas to live. There is a lot of nightlife in clubs and lounges on the main north-south avenues - Columbus and Amsterdam especially. And Broadway has great shopping all up and down the blocks in that area. It will be more pricey than the areas I note above, but you can find some affordable apartments in this area. (And by affordable I don't mean cheap, but you MIGHT find a one bedroom in your price range, as well as studios.

The streets just north of Central Park West are now being gentrified, as is much of Harlem. Also up and coming - but still having a ways to go - is Washington Heights, which is the streets west of Broadway in the 140s and upward. There are some solid old buildings in the area, some of which have been renovated, but also many rundown buildings. The population is primarily Hispanic working and middle class. Some of the buildings have magnificent views of Manhattan and the Hudson River.

$2,000 in Manhattan? Don't expect a "great" place in a great neighborhood for that. Especially your own place. Maybe a share, but it would be small. Rents are outrageous in Manhattan for what you get. Unless you are way way up in Washington Heights or Inwood, (that would be close to The Bronx hospitals). Got a car? Manhattan is no fun for parking and very expensive to rent a space not on the street. Manhattan is just way over-rated and over priced, it's not like the movies.

I can't believe someone actually thinks that the Bronx and Brooklyn aren't IN the city! That is hilarious! Does she not know it would take her less time to get to major points in Manhattan by living in certain parts of Brooklyn then living in the upper west/east side of Manhattan? This isn't the movies honey...it's real life. And $2000 for the Village in a true 1 bedroom, remmeber no roommates or large alcove?!? OMG, is she for REAL? Have fun moving in your studio in the lower east side of Manhattan for that! When you come to reality and get your wake up call, let us all know. And if you do happen to find this perfect apartment at that locaiton and price, please...do us all a favor and give us your broker's name. Not to be mean, but I am also a pharmaceutical rep and have been living in NYC for a while and I too had my wake up call. Good luck!
