This is a universal problem I was familiar with even in London in the 1980's (thanks to the IRA) so your solutions are worth their weight in gold! Usually you leave them with the concierge of the hotel you stay in, so the ideas such as Macey's, hire a car etc are really great - I now know what to suggest in Sydney where they have closed most of the baggage lockers due to security concerns (they have taken bins off stations for the same reason - it also stops fires from people setting them alight!). Brisbane still has lockers at its airport however and I think Heathrow (London Airport) opened one with an x-ray for bona fida passengers (with tickets passports & cash etc) but may have changed its mind and closed it since I was last there. Perhaps JFK has also done this? Its a problem I coudl have also as I leave in the afternoon I think........so again thanks David

while I am not a new yourker, I just stored my luggage at Penn station.
I found out that as long as you have either an Amtrak or a Njtransit ticket they have to store your bags.
So, the easiest thing is to buy a $4 ticket on NJtransit from Penn station to Newark, show it to the lady adn store up to 3 bags per person for $4.5 per 24 hours. The storage is right by track 5 and it is very easily accessible.

Words of caution about the luggage check at Penn Station, allow yourself plenty of time when picking up your luggage. The line can get LONG.

For those going to Yankee stadium before leaving town:
My boyfriend and I went to the Yankee game at 1pm and our flight left at 7pm. Since I read this thread before we went, we left our backpacks checked at our hotel back down at 29th st./7th ave.
When we arrived at Yankee stadium we decided to use the bathroom in the bowling alley/sprots bar accross the street by the subway station.
As we walked in we see it: BAG CHECK $5.00. Lo and behold a wall of shelves with bags and backpacks. (I didn't look to see if they took bigger suitcases because I was too uptight about having left our bags back at the hotel.)
So as of 8/4/07 (the day we went to the game) you can at least check backpacks at the bowling alley next to the stadium.

Has anyone any update regarding this problem? I go to NYC almost every day to study at the public libraries (yeah, I go all that way because there are no wifi access in the nearby libraries in Paterson, NJ except the one in downtown which is a scary area; also, NYC is the most accessible, i'd have to take 2 bus rides to other nearby towns with libraries that have wifi access) and I was thinking of renting a locker to leave my ridiculously heavy laptop and books so I can maybe do a bit of exercise brisk walking or jogging before I go home (can't do that in Paterson--- as I mentioned, it's a dangerous area). Does anyone know how much it is to leave baggage at the Hilton Hotel? I read somewhere that they have that service.
