Safe areas of Manhattan

Is it a lot more unsafe to walk alone as a white female than as a white male? I walked around a lot of Manhattan areas (Upper West Side, Upper East Side, Midtown, Chelsea, The Village, Financial District etc.) at times ranging from let's say 8pm to around midnight, alone, for an entire month while doing a work placement period in the city. I'm 18 years old and a guy.
I never found anything even slightly scary and I never got mugged, beaten up or anything like it. My impression of Manhattan is that, overall, it's seems to be really safe.
Also, I only traveled by subway no matter what time it was, I never took a cab.

Hi
I'm a musician who lives in London at the moment, I'm planning to move to New York in a few months, I know of some people who've moved to Soho and Nolita, are these safe areas? My budget will be around $900 - $1700 per month, any suggestions on other areas too. I'd like a more central location.
thanks

I am a young, small, female and lived a few blocks from here and I can assure you that it is very safe. Several times I walked home from the train station by myself at night and felt perfectly safe (and I'm not just being unaware because there are definitely places I wouldn't do that). I wouldn't wander around at 4 AM by myself anywhere, but at 9:00 at night it was fine.

Hi. I was wondering what are the best (nice, clean, safe) areas where one could PURCHASE a 3 bedroom town-house or apartment close to Manhattan for about 600-700K. I doubt you would get anything in Manhattan for that much, right? Thanks

Depends on how big the kids are. There is a VERY active community of parents with small children. You can find an interesting bulletin board at:

Our elementary schools are pretty good. Middle school is a black hole, but that's true of everywhere else in the city too. We have two parochial schools and a private school in the neighborhood as well. It's not going to be all chi-chi and top-1%-of-everything like Manhattan. But it's an honest family neighborhood full of diverse, good people.

Hi
Im looking to move into UWS for a period of about a yr.
Is west 110th st safe to walk alone even after midnight? I heard that it might not be such a good idea since its close to harlem as well, and espcially for a female alone.
ive never been to NY before so would really appreciate your replies in getting to know the area better. thanks

Well, it depends on where on w110th you are talking about. East of central park west, its technically part of central harlem, which, while not the safest neighborhood in Manhattan, is not half bad. I considered living on 110th across from central park, but I felt I could get a better apartment for less by moving above 125th. Don't write off a neighborhood without walking around it a couple of times, especially once or twice at night. I'm a mid-20s white girl, and I've lived in the 150s and the 120s with no problems. After midnight though, I try to take cabs home. If you are talking about 110th west of CPW, then its a nice area, bordering the Upper West Side and Morningside Heights, two very pleasant neighborhoods. Since there's alot of restaurants and bars, I don't feel too unsafe walking around there late at night, but as in any neighborhood in NYC, use your head...walk in a group if you can, take a cab if you can.
