Mayoral front – runner Christine Quinn wants to start an agency to oversee the NYPD which would help shape police policies. Policing the police has been slammed as a political power play by many and State Sen. Martin Golden blasted the idea as ‘pathetic’ and ‘sad.’ All this and Quinn hasn’t even moved into Gracie Mansion yet. What would be known as the Inspector General’s Office has also met with criticism from NYPD. A spokesperson for Police Commissioner Ray Kelly – whom Quinn has praised – said IG is completely unnecessary. “No police department in America has more oversight than NYPD, ” said Kelly spokesperson Paul Browne, citing federal monitoring of intelligence operations and five DA’s, as well as two US attorney’s and the state attorney general. However Quinn’s idea is not completely dead in the Hudson River. Both the NYCLU and Communities United for Police Reform supported the idea. Quinn’s road to Mayor is going to be a bumpy ride.
