Re: !!!A "REAL" New Yorker!!! - 18 years ago
<<Whats a REAL New Yorker? A REAL New Yorker doesn't have tu be born here in NYC>> Disagree. In order to be a REAL NYer you HAVE to be born & raised here (that means went to school here for grammer & high school). Just bc you moved here at 25 does NOT make you a NYer. As for the block, do you really think people know what you mean? The blocks refers to knowing EVERby bxgrl74 - What is a New Yorker? Add your definition!

Lohmans is great except you know its in the Bronx well above 96th Street. Don't want to scare people now. There is another one in White Plains too.by bxgrl74 - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Nightlife... - 18 years ago
Go to Times Square, get a fake id, add a few years on. I did that at 15 (made myself out to be 25). It always worked, got into clubs w/no problem. Of course it was 1989 & no one in this city really cared what when on but I can't see that being 18 such a huge deal. My sister was getting into clubs at 14 w/no questions asked. As you can see we had a lot of parental control as children.by bxgrl74 - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Best Places to Live in New York City for the first time - 18 years ago
Parkchester has too many shootings, robberies & car thefts. Wouldn't give 2 cents to live there. And in the Parkchester buildings allow too much renting to section 8. Why pay rent when the neighbor is sitting on their butt all day doing nothing? If you want the Bronx, go to Morris Park, Pelham Bay, Throgs Neck. You will be able to rent a place in a private house, which is much quieterby bxgrl74 - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Strike Contingency Plan - 18 years ago
First off, they are getting word from International Headquarters NOT to strike. Toussiant is trying to make a point to the MTA. There is more to this than money. Try better benefits & to stop petty discipline actions against employees and if someone is hired to be a track worker don't expect them to clean the platform (there are specific cleaners for that). Re: A collection of definitions - 18 years ago
Beg to differ on some of these. 1. I never heard ANYONE call Manhattan the city until I went to high school in the Bronx (I lived in Manhattan). A real born & raised Manhattanite will NEVER refer to it as "the city". Its downtown, uptown, midtown, or by neighborhood (Village, Harlem, Inwood, Little Italy, Chinatown, ect.). I can always tell a non born & raised Manhattanite wby bxgrl74 - What is a New Yorker? Add your definition!
Re: Graffitti Walks - 18 years ago
Go to the Bronx & look at the buildings are neighborhoods that have turned into dumps bc of this destruction of property. I just don't get why people glorify this. I guess when you live in a building that was tagged up & saw it on the walls inside the building too, you just find it vile & disgusting. PS There's nothing impressive about it. Re: Harlem and Washinton Heights - 18 years ago
I grew up in Inwood...lived there for 18 years. My mom was born & raised there too. My dad moved there when he 16. I will say that Inwood is MUCH better than it was when we moved out in 92. But you really have to live on the west side of Broadway. The buildings there are nicer, most w/elevators. The east side, where I am from, is much noisier, dirty, buildings aren't in the best conditioby bxgrl74 - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: mets/yanks and giants/jets - 18 years ago
Ummmm....I think people in the Bronx root for the Yanks too. Only seems fitting. Personally, I can't stomache a team that plays in a purple stadium. Sorry but its a little strange to say the least. Mets=My Entire Team Sucks. I grew up in Manhattan, we were always Yankee fans (although the REAL old timers might still be Giants fans). As for football, I would say Giants. Whatever....I still you're all playing w/fire. If everyone jumped off the Brooklyn Bridge would you all follow? Not something I would do. Pregnant, not pregnant, men, women, whatever. Not my life so do whatever you all want. Just remember that if something does happen, do not blame the city, the police, the mayor, ect...Just yourselves.by bxgrl74 - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Burberry umbrella knockoff? Where to buy? - 18 years ago
<<They took us into basements of old buildings (on Cortlandt Alley, off of Canal Street, just south of Walker St) where there were rooms full of 1)tourist ladies and 2) really good knock-offs.>> Not for nothing, but that has to be one of the STUPIDEST things I've ever heard of someone doing. I cannot believe that ANYONE would go into a building w/people they don't know.by bxgrl74 - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Burberry umbrella knockoff? Where to buy? - 18 years ago
Most of the stuff you buy on Canal will fall apart. Maybe not right away, but I would give it a few months before something rips or falls off. There is no "better" store, they all sell the same fake stuff. And don't be surprised if you see the cops locking up the sellers & shutting down the place. I saw that last year. The tourists freaked out. I thought it was pretty funny.by bxgrl74 - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Dangerous areas? - 18 years ago
Well what would you be going to Hunts Point for? I know they relocated the Fulton Fish Market there but other than illegal street racing or getting some nasty hoe for the night, I don't know why you would want to go there. Ok maybe if you need a part for your car or if you have family/friends who live there. But its not exactly the place I'd want to go sight see...not exactly much to seby bxgrl74 - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: Free parking in New York - 18 years ago
The only "free" places I could say you can park in Manhattan is anywhere above 96th Street east & west sides. Inwood is the most northern part of Manhattan on the west side. Its located near the A & 1 trains & there is an express bus that goes to the east side for $5. You may also luck out parking in the 100's on the east side & can walk to 96th Street for the 6 traby bxgrl74 - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: rudeness - 18 years ago
First off, I find that those who weren't born & raised here to be ruder than the REAL natives. Secondly, I don't think we are any ruder than any place else. We always moving, usually rushed. We don't have time to stand behind some twit chit chatting on their phone about the great pair of shoes they just bought. We don't have time to try to enter into GCS while a tour bus fby bxgrl74 - Ask a New Yorker :

www.iconparking.com They offer a map of their garages plus will tell you how much it will cost to park there. The further west you go, the cheaper it is. Weekends are also cheaper too. I've used the garage on E.59th Street next to the Humane Society for only $12 for X amount of hours & its totally worth it, considering that a ticket is well over $100 plus you may get towed. Kids like to dilly dally. Your going to the Xmas show so I would just do Rockefeller & Saks. Maybe L&T, but thats on 40th & 5th, which is a good 10 blocks south & 1 block west than Radio City. And the crowds are already starting plus the traffic. Plus take in that kids have to pee, get hungry, ect...so looking at windows in Saks may take 10 minutes but the bathroom time/snack timeby bxgrl74 - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Having a baby in a 1-bedroom in Manhattan - 18 years ago
I grew up in Upper Manhattan in a 2 bd w/2 parents. I shared a bedroom w/my sister. I had a friend who had a 1 bd w/2 kids. It was REALLY tight. What you could do is give the baby the bedroom & get a pullout or futon for the living room. Are you having a live in babysitter? I would really suggest a 2bd in that case. I did know people who had 1 bd w/2 kids. And space was beyond tight. I doby bxgrl74 - Ask a New Yorker :

My issue w/the 2nd ave line is how limited it is. Its only going to make a few stops. I don't really see what the need is for. Its not like there aren't 3 lines on the east side already plus buses that go up & down every avenue plus crosstown. And I don't want to hear about the croweded problem. My dad is a doorman. He gets "gifts" from individual tenanats and its generally cash. In the building I work in we tip everyone individually. Remember this....not all the staff gets along.
