Re: East 60s/Second Avenue - 13 years ago
Thanks for the information! I saw a very nice apartment in a building on 62nd/2nd, but it is on a low floor facing Second Avenue, and I'm definitely concerned about the traffic noise from both the street and the entrance to the bridge. Any insight on that? Also, even if there is no station construction in the low 60s, won't they still be tunneling underneath the street? I don'tby rf1279 - Ask a New Yorker :
East 60s/Second Avenue - 13 years ago
Hi all- I'd love some input/advice from the Upper East Siders on this board. I'm in the market for a new (rental) apartment. I've lived in the West 80s for years, and, quite honestly, don't really venture across the park as often as I probably should. However, I've started to expand my search to the UES, since I can get a little bit more for my money over there. I&by rf1279 - Ask a New Yorker :
Electric heat? - 13 years ago
Does anybody live in an NYC apartment with electric heat? I just looked at a place that I liked, but it has electric baseboards and I'd have to pay my own heating bill. A co-worker once told me that she had electric heat and was moving because her electric bill was about $300 in the winter, which just isn't doable for me. Anybody have firsthand experience with this? By the way, I didby rf1279 - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Good management companies?? - 13 years ago
Is anybody happy with their management company?? I got pretty much the same response from my friends on Facebook, so now I'm wondering if maybe there just AREN'T any good ones out there? How about nice buildings to consider in Chelsea (the pretty green blocks, not the gritty industrial ones!), Gramercy/Flatiron, Union Square, or anywhere in the Village? (Or the UWS, although I'vby rf1279 - Ask a New Yorker :
Good management companies?? - 13 years ago
I've lived in New York for a number of years, and for the past four I've been in a building that I love on the Upper West Side (West End/80s). I'm looking to move when my lease expires next month, mostly because I want to upgrade from my teeny studio. There aren't any bigger apartments coming open in my building (I've been waiting for more than a year for something to opeby rf1279 - Ask a New Yorker :
Tips for cooling a hot NYC studio apartment? - 14 years ago
I live in a small studio apartment, and it gets VERY hot in the fall and spring. It's so hot that it's uncomfortable to have company over, and when I'm home alone I can't wear more than shorts and a tank top. (And even then I'm still sweating!) During the summer I run the A/C pretty much full time, but we've reached the point in the fall where it's too cool oby rf1279 - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Larger Broadway theatre seats - 14 years ago
You were more comfortable at the Gerswhin because it's a much newer theatre (built in 1972) than the August Wilson (built in 1925). Other theatres built in the 1970s and 80s--particularly the Minskoff and the Marquis--tend to be similar in feeling. The seating at Studio 54 is also pretty comfortable. Most older theatres tend to feel a bit cramped, but some are worse than others. (In my opby rf1279 - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Rental market, rent increases, and moving within Manhattan... - 14 years ago
My place is not rent stabilized, unfortunately. That's why I'm trying to figure out if I can leave and then re-rent the same apartment at the lower rate. I'm just not sure if it's doable, or even legal! I'm hoping somebody out there might know for sure.by rf1279 - Ask a New Yorker :
Rental market, rent increases, and moving within Manhattan... - 14 years ago
Hi! A quick question for anybody who might be familiar with the rental market in Manhattan, or who has been through this themselves... I currently live in a nice but teeny tiny (even for my neighborhood) studio, and my lease is up for renewal next month. For some reason, my rent is increasing by $150 if I choose to renew, which means that I'd be paying WAY more than my apartment is worby rf1279 - Ask a New Yorker :

Bedroom - 15 years ago
I'm currently in the market for a new bed--something slightly better than Ikea (which is what I currently have) but still relatively affordable. I'm most likely looking for a full or maybe queen-size bed or storage bed. Anybody have suggestions for furniture stores in Manhattan?by rf1279 - Ask a New Yorker :
Furniture store on Lexington - 15 years ago
A few weeks ago I passed a furniture store--it was somewhere on Lexington Avenue in the 20s, on the east side of the street. I didn't have a chance to go in at the time, but saw a bed in the window that I liked. It might've been a discount-type place. Anybody happen to know the name and exact cross-streets of this store? Thanks!by rf1279 - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Dance classes - 16 years ago
You might also want to consider Manhattan Motion. They're on the Upper West Side: I wouldn't automatically rule out the big studios like Steps and Broadway Dance, either. You can always take a lower-level class as a drop-in, and see what you think.by rf1279 - Ask a New Yorker :

That is the location of Sesame Workshop's corporate offices, but I'm not sure that they have a retail store there, unless maybe it's new? You can shop the Sesame Store online:by rf1279 - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Update please on internet access - does everyone have Laptop wifi? - 16 years ago
I actually had my first experience with this recently, thanks to the fine folks at Time Warner Cable who took a week to come fix my home connection. I have a laptop that I usually use at home, but with no connection I had to find creative new ways to check my e-mail. (And as a side note, "so much" free WiFi is a bit of an exaggeration...it definitely exists, but not to the point where iby rf1279 - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Roosevelt Island? - 16 years ago
When I was first looking to move to New York a few years ago, I actually saw apartments in one of those "giant residential towers" that Red mentioned. The place had none of the charm of other New York apartment buildings, and I found that everything--both the housing and the island itself--felt slightly artificial and disconnected from the rest of the city. It just wasn't for me.by rf1279 - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Shakespere in the Parking Lot - 16 years ago
Guys, "Shakespeare in the Parking Lot" is a real event--totally separate from Shakespeare in the Park. Here's a link: Unfortunately I've never been, so I can't help with the seating question. Good luck!by rf1279 - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Good place to buy computer in Manhattan - 16 years ago
DO NOT buy a computer from Circuit City, or at least, don't bother purchasing a warranty, because they're terrible about honoring it. I bought my last laptop there (before making the switch from PC to Mac--wish I'd done it sooner!) and had nothing but problems. Avoid them if you can.by rf1279 - Ask a New Yorker :

If you're staying on the West Side, also check out: Canine Ranch 452 Columbus Avenue (81st/82nd) 212-787-7387 Kind of expensive, but they have really unique toys, treats, accessories, and even "fashions" for dogs!by rf1279 - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Les Miserables? - 16 years ago
Sorry if I was a bit down on Les Mis, but I've never been a big fan. I second Hairspray or Drowsy--both fun, splashy musicals that should have good discount tickets available.by rf1279 - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Les Miserables? - 16 years ago
Of those three choices, I'd pick front row of the mezzanine. This "revival" of Les Mis is essentially a remounting of the long-running production that closed in '03 and has been touring since. It's certainly not an amazing production (there are some questionable casting choices), but if you haven't seen Les Mis before and are a fan of mega musicals, give it a shotby rf1279 - Ask a New Yorker :

Re: Desserts in Time Square? - 16 years ago
The length of the line really depends on when you go--avoid the weekends at all costs (the place is tourist central) and aim for a weekday instead. The last time I attempted to get in was when I had visitors in town who really wanted to go, and the line was literally out the door and down the street. We waited for awhile but eventually gave up and went elsewhere for dessert.by rf1279 - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: Had heart set on Jersey Boys but . . . - 16 years ago
I sat center rear mezzanine for Jersey Boys (a few rows forward from where you'd be) and the seats were good, but not great. I'd venture to say the same about the show, but I know I'm in the minority with that one... Regarding Spring Awakening, I agree with what ieee said. Are you familiar with the plot/music of the musical, or the Wedekind play that it is based on? It's faby rf1279 - Ask a New Yorker :
