What do I really need to pack to wear for the cold? I'm trying to keep it minimal. Mostly dining and theatre for the trip. I'm thinking I can walk at least to nearby places.. how far is reasonable in this climate?

So long as you have a fairly heavy warm coat, hat, scarf, gloves and warm boots you should be fine. Pack things you can layer as it can be warm inside.
