fall foliage and b&b near city

This answer has to do with life outside the city, so I'm not sure if it falls in your mandate here .... But: my girlfriend and I hope to get away this weekend to see the fall colors and crash at a nice but inexpensive B&B, say within three hours of the city at the most. Does anyone have any inside ideas or advice? The internet is so full of marketing that it's hard to tell what's worthwhile and what's a tourist trap ...
Thanks!
Thanks!

My dear friend Jim Bulger an old family friend ownes the Swan Hotel in Lambertville, NJ on the Delaware River. 1 1/2 hr from The Port Authority $30 r/t Lambertville is a quintessential east coast small Revolutionary town. A great day trip or weekend getaway. I spent the weekend with Jim and dined at the Swan Hotel aka Anton's Elegant,quaint..Jim has an amazing eye for antiques and placement of all kinds of artifacts. Around the corner from The Swan is The Boat House. This is also Jims. It's remarkable...again the design eye of Jim is superb.

We're still a few weeks from peak colors, the leaves have barely begun to change here. Even a little further upstate, the colors are still "patchy."
I love the idea of driving through the country and finding a cosy and romantic B&B, but the reality is that country inns and B&Bs get booked months ahead for the fall season, and they're not cheap.
A day along the Hudson would still be nice. Cold Spring is a cute town with antiques shops and restaurants that's a short ride up on the Metro North. Or do a winery tour of Long Island's North Fork. What about apple picking? The weather should be perfect for a fall outdoorsy day.
