Think Whole Foods meets Bloomingdale's, put an Italian spin on it, and you get a sense of the look and feel of Eataly, the gastronomical monster of a marketplace unveiled Tuesday night for its first preview. The 42,500-square-foot market, located in the Flatiron district, will open to the general public on Aug. 31.

Among the options for shopping and eating in the 36,500-square-foot space will be antipasti, salumi, pizza, fresh pasta, crudo and other seafood, roast meats sold by the pound, panini, dessert items, gelati and coffee.

Some retail areas will have dining counters. The fish monger and the produce area (where a “vegetable butcher” will prep your artichokes and such to order for cooking at home) will also have restaurants with waiter service.

What happens when three of New York’s most beloved Italian-American restaurateurs team up with the founder of a gourmet food and wine market in Turin, Italy? The result is the grand, ambitious, sprawling Eataly, opening Tuesday in the Toy Building at 200 Fifth Ave. between 23rd and 24th streets. The complex features areas for shopping, learning and — of course — eating, as you might expect from a multimillion-dollar project dreamed up by culinary bigwigs Mario Batali, Joe Bastianich, Lidia Matticchio Bastianich and Eataly founder Oscar Farinetti.

I passed by yesterday evening, and there was a line down the block waiting to get in!!!! From the outside, it looks very nice, but it also looks like the kind of place that charges $10 for a tin of tomatoes that goes for $1.50 anyplace else.

Went to Eataly last month, wasn't impressed. The floor plan was horrendous, it was crowded, expensive and confusing. After a number of fruitless attempts at getting some service, we left and ate elsewhere.

I was in the one in Turin about 10 days before and it wso much better. I found it easier to order, the service was pleasant, the layout better and you didn't have to wait 45 minutes for a table. Also you didn't have to leave the building to get a takeaway pizza.
