Visiting New York for the first time January 07, 2010 08:18AM |
My friends and I are coming to New York for the first time. We are stying in a hostel in Morningside.
We shall be travelling there in mid February and are dead excited.
Just wanted to know what the area of Morningside is like? Is it welcoming to visitors from England?
How about somewhere to relax such as a suana or health spa? Obviously we wont be signing up as member at the locals gyms but is there anywhere we could have a quick dip and sit in a steam room for a few a hours.
What are the travelling times to lower Manhattan from Morningside? Methods of transport?
Any help would be awesome.

The Affinia Dumont Hotel through Oasis Spa has a $25 day pass...Most gyms will also have day passes...if you want to have a real special adventure and experience think The Russian Turkish Baths in the East Village....What a trip!

I would suggest finding another place to stay!
Two links for you. The first is tripadvisor's review page on the hostel. As you read through the reviews, please note that the only good reviews are by one-time posters. That typically means they are shills for the hotel. You should be relying on reviews from frequent contributors.

More importantly, this message thread suggests that the place is ILLEGAL:

Here are some options for you:
Hostelling International:
[hinewyork.org]
Big Apple Hostel:
Also look at the West Side YMCA and the Vanderbilt YMCA.
Or, if you can swing it, think about a room at the Hotel Newton, Radio City Apts. or the Salisbury. Since you pay per person at a hostel, and per room at a hotel, the difference might be worth it.

I would suggest you stay in lower Manhattan area because frankly, nearly everything you would want to do will be under 59th street (aside from some museums). Morningside is a residential area with really nothing at all. Traveling times to downtown or lower Manhattan would take approximately 30 minutes by subway.
If you are looking at a budget of $500 for 3, you can easily find a hotel in any area including midtown. Personally though, aside from your tonight show and times square, the midtown area is a big business district with not much charm. Lower Manhattan is a better place to stay in. It is a mixture of residential districts, small shops, charming eateries and its all easily walkable.
Speaking of walking, you should probably join a walking tour (forget those lame bus tours). Some private ones are great for visitors to the city. Try Blue Panda Tours at www.bluepandatours.com. They offer private personalized New] York City walking tours of lower Manhattan for your group of friends or family. Since they are personalized, they bring you to see the things you want to see and do (like shop or eat) but still within a framework of history and culture tour.

The L-Hostel looks pretty respectable, located in a historic Romanesque tenement house and is in a vibrant part of Harlem with easy access to most West Side subway lines, mainly the 1 but the A,C, and B are close by. All of these subways will bring you into lower Manhattan but explore Harlem too while you can.
