If you don't walk miles than you are not seeing New York. You gotta walk to talk the talk

And the crosstown blocks are roughly 2 times larger than the up/down blocks.

Susie;
In all seriousness, walking uptown/downtown the blocks are much faster to walk. It's believable you can walk one block in 5 minutes, give or take a few minutes, based on people traffic on the sidewalks.

For crosstown walking, the blocks are much wider & people traffic is a bit slower, so it can take 10-15 minutes, depending on the time of day.

But.........for tourists, and seeing NYC...walking is truly the best way to see the city, Manhattan.

Take 2 good pair of comfortable walking shoes, and get an unlimited metro card for the length of your stay.
For your own knowledge, I also recommend buying a step counter that'll count your every step & mile walked.

In my one week trip in April, I averaged 10-20 miles per day for 7 days.
This doesn't include the subway trips I took.

If your destination is more than 15-20 blocks, unless you're in no rush and want to just enjoy the day, walking is great. Otherwise, subway.
