cheap stay
June 01, 2006 05:41AM
I'm 20, I'm a kiwi, I'm coming to NY for a week in January. I would love to stay longer but I'm only over your neck of the woods for a month, and I'll be spending most of that time in Canada with my brother.
Since he's on an NZ passport he can't come to NY with me, so I need to find somewhere I can stay for cheap where I can meet people who... well... won't kill me and sell my organs on the street for drug money. Basically. So, where's a good place for me to stay? like, a backpackers? student hostel? your place?

Also, I want to do the odd touristy thing, but I don't want to travel with a big group of tourists. But still be safe and not freak out about getting lost (I'm from wellington. there are 180 000 people here. it's a big city to me). So how do I live the city (for a week, granted), taking it in as best I can, without having to do it as a guided tour?

I want to know people in New York so they can show me the city, but I don't. So I'm relying on you fine folk to advise me on the best way to go about this.

Cheers kids.

Why can't your brother come with you on a NZ pasport?

Brother can't come with because of the visa he has at the mo - not because of the passport. It was really late when I wrote that.

Marea, are you from Aussie and have you been playing on this site for about 2 years or so?

Yes I'm an Aussie, currently in Sydney but was living in and visiting New York from May 2003 to May 2005, I have one son currently living in New York and another one visiting at the moment. I will be living in Seoul, South Korea from September this year till May next year but hope to be back in New York to see my son in October this year and then to live there again late next year. Between May and August next year we will be back in Australia and also spending a lot of time travelling in Europe, then September and October in France for the Rugby World Cup.

A couple of years ago I was just dreaming about visiting and stumbled across this site and you replied to a couple of my posts. I'm impressed I remember that actually. Of course this time I actually AM going and it's just started feeling real!

Rugby world cup is going to be awesome. Funny feeling it will be All Blacks and Wallabies...

That's fantastic that you are finally going, I know you will love the place.

Looking forward to the World Cup, I only got to see the opening ceremony and a couple of games when it was here in Australia in 2003 because I had to return to New York, we saw the final in New York in the middle of the night with about 60 other Aussies. The way the Wallabies are playing at the moment I think it will be a bloody miracle if they make the final this time though.

Best be careful what I write the sister of one of the Wallabies is walking past me.

Abi, in addition to the youth hostels, you might contact NYU. It's a long shot, but I know they offer their dorms during the summer, so perhaps in January as well? It's worth contacting them, anyway. The good thing about the youth hostels, particularly the one uptown on Amsterdam Ave., is that you can be alone or easily hook up with other young solo travelers.

Hi Marea!

NYU, Genius! I might have a look there actually. I looked on the hostel booker site and found a homestay with a family who seem really friendly and sweet, and who just want to show the people their NY, but I think a Hostel could be awesome. If I'm going to be there just after New Years, is there school on at that time? The holidays over here are really different to what you have, and I'm out of touch with these ones let alone other countries.

I have an excellent place that's what you're looking for. It's on the Upper West side @ 104th st. To get a full list of information, e-mail me at jeffreysmith@triad.rr.com.
I'll be happy to put you in touch with a terrific lady that has nice accomodations for a single male for one week at very reasonable prices.
Talk to you soon
