Phantom of the Opera: Majestic Theater. 247 West 45th St
Hotel: Red Roof Inn - 6 West 32nd St
Is it safe to walk back from the show to our hotel during the week after the evening performance?
We are a couple in our 50's.
How far would it be?
If not any tips on how to organise a taxi when then are crowds would be great. Do you prebook or is there a taxi rank with plenty of taxis?
Thank you.

It is safe; if you walk, I'd suggest walking over to Fifth Avenue and then down Fifth, which is a very nice walk. That would be about 3/4 mile.
NYC does not have taxi ranks per se, but there are so many taxis that it's really not necessary. Just walk over to the nearest avenue, out of the crowd, and flag one down.

The problem with Broadway shows is that they all let out at about the same time, making it nearly impossible to get a taxi. I agree that the walk over to 5th Avenue and then down to the hotel would be nicer than walking down the avenues in between. It's not that they're unsafe, but you'd be walking through a commercial area and many streets could be quite deserted. Fifth Avenue will always be pretty lively. If you don't feel like walking, stop at a nearby place for an after-theater cocktail. By the time you come out you'll find a sea of empty taxis. Lots of places nearby, just stroll up two blocks to "Restaurant Row," that is, 46th St. between 8th-9th Avenues, you'll find lots of places. If you pop in for a drink at Joe Allen's, you might end up rubbing elbows with the stars of the show you've just seen. You could also walk over to 5th Ave. and take a downtown bus.
