We have picked up hire cars in New Jersey, just caught the Path train from Manhattan to Journal Square. It can be a bit daunting from there though as well when you're used to driving on the other side. I am also an Aussie. Look for a biggish place out of Manhattan that is on a train line and check out hire car agencies there. We have had good luck with Enterprise. We have hired a car in Albany after catching the train as well.
You do realise that it is a very long way from New York to Niagara. When we went we flew from New York to Buffalo and hired a car from there. Much simpler and quicker.

HI There,
My boyfreind and I want to move to NYC but have NO idea where to start. We are a young couple without a lot of $$ were looking to spend no more than $2000 a month on rent. were is a safe neighboorhood that is in a good location in NYC? We don't care how big the apartment is really, its more important to be in a good location

Is 141 WStreet and Amsterdam a safe place to stay for tourism?
Its my first time in NY and the hotel I found there is HALF the price of the next hotel I could find, so that got me suspicious.
I checked Google Streets and it seems fine, but it is really a big difference in price and that makes me wonder ($800 for 10 days, my other choice is a nice department in Yorkville, but it is $1700)
So, how is that area of Harlem? I live in Buenos Aires, Argentina, so I'm not unaware of safe/unsafe neighbourhoods, and I will be traveling with my wife. We are 29 & 26 yo, white (I tell it since it seems to make a difference, not used to racial problems here)
