Meet Kathryn, October 2004’s Uberchic. We met Kathryn sitting in a Starbuck’s downtown, working on her computer.

AskaNewYorker: Hello Kathryn! How long have you been living in New York?

Kathryn : Four years.

AskaNewYorker: And where are you from, originally?

Kathryn: Originally from Toronto, but I also lived in Texas.

AskaNewYorker: What do you do here in New York?

Kathryn: I’m an actress, and I also do some web design and tech support.

AskaNewYorker: What acting school do you go to, or did you go to?

Kathryn: I went to NYU, and graduated. I studied at Stella Adler.

AskaNewYorker: How does NYU stack up against HB Studios’ Ute Hagen?

Kathryn: There are so many studios which began by a teacher, like Ute Hagen, they had all these disciples and were very hard-core. NYU came in and bought many of them so now many of them are NYU Students and some conservatories at night. They get all their money from NYU. They need NYU. HB Studios is independant.

AskaNewYorker: Describe these earrings for us please.

Kathryn: I get a lot of compliments on these, actually. They’re dangling bubbles with little shiny things that flicker.

AskaNewYorker: What are you reading now, if anything?

Kathryn: Right now I’m learning about meditation. I’m reading a book called The Heart of Stillness. I never really meditated before. It’s interesting…a non-secular approach.

AskaNewYorker: How good are you at sitting still?

Kathryn: Very good, because I used to be a model for painters.

AskaNewYorker: Tell us about your uber-style.

Kathryn: My style is a combination of things I bought when I was making good money and things that I bought when I was making no money.

AskaNewYorker: And these bracelets?

Kathryn: My dad got them for me when we were traveling north of Toronto in a little town. I was much younger and I said “Dad can I have these” and he obliged.

AskaNewYorker: Any tattoos?

Kathryn: No, none. My roommate has like 5 and that is enough for the both of us.

AskaNewYorker: What part of the city do you live in?

Kathryn: Greenpoint, Brooklyn.

AskaNewYorker: Any words of wisdom for an aspiring actress moving to the city?

Kathryn: Don’t move here with anyone. Don’t move here without knowing anyone.

AskaNewYorker: Any advice for women to meet their “perfect dance partner”?

Kathryn: Don’t look. The best things will find you. Synchronicity.

AskaNewYorker: Where do you get your lovely locks cut?

Kathryn: I also used to be a haircut model and got it cut for free at top salons with guys like Fabio styling my hair. I did that when I had no money at all and it worked out well. Now I go to a place called Soon Salon on 23rd St.

AskaNewYorker: Well, thanks for chatting with us. Good luck with everything. Can we hope to see you soon in something, as an actress?

Kathryn: I just finished a national tour–Shakespeare. I was away from lovely New York. I played Desdemona in Othello. Lots of strangling…it was fun.

AskaNewYorker: Do you have a SAG card?

Kathryn: No, I have an equity card. I just got it, now I’m filming a movie. I was just in rehearsal.

AskaNewYorker: You’re doing a movie now?

Kathryn: yes, and learning to meditate, have a dancing partner who just moved in, painting and building things, being very domestic.
