Taking a friend to lunch at the United Nations - 11 years ago
I have friends coming to NYC from France for a vacation. I would like to know if it's a good idea to take them to lunch at the United Nations. I have heard that there is a UN dining room, with fantastic views, that is open to the public. Has anyone been there? If so, what's it like?by jackienyc - Ask a New Yorker :
Looking for restaurant for coffee and dessert date - 13 years ago
I would like to take some friends out to a nice Manhattan restaurant. They do not drink, and I can't afford to take them out to dinner. I would like to take them to a place where we could have coffee and dessert. Can anyone suggest a place that would be nice to sit for a while, have dessert, and be able to have a quiet conversation with friends? Thanks!by jackienyc - Ask a New Yorker :

Hi Oracle, Thanks for your response. I am taking your suggestions and will skip the holidays. I would plan, instead, a hotel stay of 2 nights, Wednesday and Thursday January 13th and 14th, early next year. Thanks so much!by jackienyc - Ask a New Yorker :
NYC hotels under $200 a night - 14 years ago
Can anyone recommend a nice hotel for a mature woman in NYC for under $200 a night? Interested in the neighborhoods of the upper west side, the upper east side, Greenwich Village or Tribeca. This would be for a 3 day stay - a long weekend during the holidays. Thanks! Jackieby jackienyc - Ask a New Yorker :

where can I work with a friend on my laptop in Manhattan?3 - 14 years ago
A friend is willing to help me resolve a problem I have working with some new software on my computer. Is there someplace in Manhattan where I could bring my laptop and we could work for about an hour? The library would not work and I'm not sure that we could work at a Starbucks. Any ideas?by jackienyc - Ask a New Yorker :

Is there a good discount store in Manhattan that sells brand name perfumes? I am told to go to Chinatown, but I wouldn't know where to go there. Is there someplace in midtown? Thanks!by jackienyc - Ask a New Yorker :
Are there other restaurants with the lovely atmosphere of Pigalle in Manhattan?22 - 14 years ago
On Saturday I had lunch with a friend at a French restaurant called 'Pigalle' on Eighth Avenue at 48th Street. It was just wonderful! We sat for a couple of hours talking and having a very nice lunch with drinks. Good food. Good service. Great laid back atmosphere. Not too noisy. Are there other places in Manhattan that are similar to this? Places where you can meet a friend and have aby jackienyc - Ask a New Yorker :
recommend a good bar on the upper west side? - 14 years ago
Can anyone recommend a good bar on the upper west side where you can have a drink that is moderately priced, and the music is not so loud that you can't have a conversation? Someplace that maybe caters to a slighty older crowd than students in their 20s? Thanks!by jackienyc - upper west side: bars
Manhattan restaurant for class reunion lunch - 14 years ago
Can anyone recommend a Manhattan restaurant where a group of us can meet for lunch in October? There probably will be 15 or 20 people, and we will be a group of professionals in our 60s and over. We could use a separate room so that we can talk undisturbed for a couple of hours. We haven't seen each in decades! I'm thinking that most people would enjoy Italian food or seafood or somethiby jackienyc - Ask a New Yorker :

It is"Fashion First, Whatever the Size".Also, all the major department stores have plus size departments, like Macy's, Lord and Taylor's. and Bloomingdales. Jackieby jackienyc - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: restaurants good when on weight watchers plan?? - 14 years ago
Use your points for restaurants that have grilled seafood, and have that with big salad and a nice glass of wine. You will be fine! From a WW member. You can even figure out the points for a meal like that before you go. Skip the bread and have fruit for dessert when out, or a small sorbet.by jackienyc - Ask a New Yorker :

Older black woman needs new hair salon - 15 years ago
Black woman over age 65 with thinning hair needs to find a good hair stylist who can focus on my hair health and condition. I have been using a perm for many years, but now I am thinking of letting the perm grow out. I have been told by a hair stylist (no longer in the city) that I could get my hair straightened without a perm. I need help with this, and with finding a new and suitable style. I have been searching on a New York City map, looking for Vilmont Avenue in the Riverdale section of the Bronx. I can't find it anywhere. I think it's somewhere around 252nd Street. If you know where this street is located, please let me know, with the cross streets. Thanks very much! Jackieby jackienyc - Ask a New Yorker :
Re: TIPPING IN MANHATTAN?? - 15 years ago
If you want an easy way to figure it out, tip double the amount of any tax you pay in restaurants. That will come to approximately 16%. The dollar a bag is also fine.by jackienyc - Ask a New Yorker :

Are you familiar with "Magic Jack"? - 15 years ago
Does anyone here have any experience using a gadget called "Magic Jack"? A friend recommended this to me. It allows you to pay only $19.99 per YEAR for telephone service, including free local and long distance calls and other features. It's hard for me to believe that this company is on the up and up, so I am checking here to look for some actual customer reviews. Thanks!by jackienyc - Ask a New Yorker :
