Just thought I'd share my perspective: my wife and I went to Canal Street for the first time this past weekend. Perhaps the day was punctuated by hot and humid weather, but the overall experience was quite gritty. Shady backrooms, rude people rushing you to make a decision; I suppose that is a given considering the circumstances and the product, but we ultimately decided to leave empty-hanby HitTheLights - Ask a New Yorker :

Went to a Vietnamese restaurant at 7th and C called Bao 111. Pretty good. The bar across the street is also gritty, everyone spoke French. Could be same place as re: above.by HitTheLights - Ask a New Yorker :
