If you did not grow up in NYC, go to school in NYC you are not a NYer. New Yorkers are not transplants from other areas. NYers are not the bridge and tunnel crew who's only a short trip away, NEW YORKER live NY. Not the culture... not the theater... not the art... no. A New Yorker grew up in the inner city of NY, whether that be Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, The Bronx, Staten Island.. not Long Island... not Fire Island lol...
If you don't have an authemtic accent, you aren't from here. A REAL New Yorker knows where a person is from by their twang. Yes, it's true - every area in the city has a different Noo Yawk accent.
