here's an idea for a day trip out of the city...
Go up to Beacon, NY. We did this on Saturday and it was a nice day away.
Take the metronorth from Grand Central up to Beacon...the trip takes about 1 hr and 20 minutes. It's a pretty train ride, especially this time of the year when the leaves are turning colors. You can walk a short distance to the "main street" and have a walk around this quaint town, stop for lunch at a place called The Cup and Saucer Restaurant and Tea Room (165 Main St - get the chicken pie and bread pudding for dessert) before heading over to see the Dia Museum, which seems to be the main attraction of the town. What a cool museum! Lots of people from the city were heading up there to go to the Dia, definately worth the trip and a nice, short trip to get out of here for a day.

Just before Beacon, same train line, is Cold Spring - another good town to have a look around in, especially if you like little antique shops. Nice restaurants too (I like Hudson Hil's Market and Cafe on Main St).
