John's is absolutely my favorite pizza, but they only sell whole pies, no slices. Even if there are just two of you, it's worth splitting one of John's pies.

The only by-the-slice places around Times Square I can think of are the generic "Ray's" -- that is, doughy dough topped with globs of cheap cheese. They're not bad in a pinch but not fabulous either. The best of those is Famous Famiglia on Broadway and 50th St. There's an old-fashioned pizza place on 49th St., between 6th-7th Aves., called Bella Napoli. They're pretty good if you go at peak lunch hour, otherwise the pies sit out too long. Their "Mama's Pizza" is very good -- thin-crust, square pizza with very good cheese. Then there's a Two Boots Pizza in the Rockefeller Center concourse. It's good but different. They use semolina to make the crust, which gives it a different taste and texture.

Did anyone catch Jon Stewart's hysterical New York v. Chicago pizza rant yesterday?

It's a popular topic, here's an older one.
